Default strange memory issue!

On a well established, long time running old socket 7 PC, I just added more memory. Went from 512meg to 768meg. It's a dual boot
system with W95c and W98SE. W95 would not boot ... figured as much. Entered MaxPhysPage=20000 in [386enh] in system.ini and all was
well. The PC saw 512meg and runs fine. But when W98 booted, it too would not run (IOS error). I have the maxfilecache=319488 (312m
for cache) set in system.ini for both OS's.

Now on a newer PC used for multimedia production I also have W98SE. It runs FINE with ONE *GIG*. All I did was set
maxfilecache=524288. There is no MaxPhysPage= what-so-ever.

Here's the question: why does the newer MM PC run fine with 1 GIG memory and the older PC will NOT accept over 512m without the
MaxPhysPage=20000 entry?

Is this a MOBO issue? When booting the MOBO RAM check shows exactly what it should (786432). GoldMemory RAM checker also shows
everything working and checking FINE!

I am puzzled as to what's going on ... your thoughts!

TIA,
Vic

Default

(Not that I really know it matters, BUT...) did you get it into the
right section: [vcache]?

(1) "START, Run, MSConfig, System.ini tab, [vcache] section".
Don't just open the section; click it to highlight.
(2) Click the "New" button
(3) Type in: "MaxFileCache=524288"
(4) Click "Apply" and "OK". Reboot.

JUST, don't exceed usable RAM, as seen at "START, Run, MSInfo32"...
376MB RAM, it says for me, because Video has grabbed away 8 MB.

Here are three articles that may have additional info...
