Winfax and mystery modem
I am looking at an external modem, made in Taiwan, with no apparent brand
name. The computer is running Windows Me. Device Manager is reporting a problem with the modem. There are no disks or manuals with the modem. If I install the Windows generic 56k modem drivers, should I expect the Windows fax software to work. In other words, should I be able to send a fax through the modem? Thanks in advance for any input |

Several points/questions.
Try Everest Home Edition (Freeware) http://www.lavalys.com/products/over...?pid=1&lang=en and/or Belarc Advisor - Free Personal PC Audit http://www.belarc.com/free_download.html which *might* give you more details regarding your modem from WinMe's pnp enumeration. You don't say exactly what 'problem' is being reported by Dev.Man - sound drivers missing, - resource conflicts/errors, perhaps? .... should I expect the Windows fax software to work? Have you actually tried it? If so, what were the results? You mentioned Winfax, but as you are in a WinMe forum, you should be aware that no 'native' fax software is included with WinMe - i.e. fax is 'not-supported'. If you are using Win98 upgraded to WinMe, then the original fax software was MS Fax. Does the modem work at all? - Can you at least, dial-out to establish an ordinary 'phone call (using dialer.exe or HyperTerminal)? Can you use it to connect to, and establish an internet connection? If so, the chances are that it will work with a 'suitable' fax program. HTH Mart "Jonno" wrote in message ... I am looking at an external modem, made in Taiwan, with no apparent brand name. Thanks Mart for your very thorough reply.
Yes the modem is actually working fine, but there is no fax printer. I did not realise the fax printer had been dropped in WinMe (I am not a WinMe user and the OS seems to be quite rare in the field). So can you suggest an easy way to facilitate fax printing on the machine? Should I be searching with Google rather than in here? "Mart" wrote: Several points/questions. Probably so, Symantec's Winfax for example - however, if you have a copy of the original Win98 CD, there is a way (courtesy of one of the MVP's who frequents these pages) but it's fairly 'complicated'. Come back if you need it and *maybe* he (Mike M) will be able to help - although I *think* that I *may* have a copy of his notes - somewhere! g Mart "Jonno" wrote in message ... Hi Mike, good to see you around. (Must give you a call, I've got an oddball
mobo issue) - In the meantime, we await Jonno. Mart "Mike M" wrote in message ... I should be around late this evening if not then I expect to be around all
day tomorrow. I'm currently trying to get my new laptop setup like I want and populated with apps. Not that it will be "my" laptop for long once I've finished. :-) Chat to you later, -- Mike Mart wrote: Hi Mike, good to see you around. or 95 for that matter... I think it's a separate install program.
