Default Explorer.exe

Upon start up I get the following error message:

Explorer: This program has performed an illegal operation
and will shut down.

Explorer caused an illegal page fault in module
explorer.exe at 015f:00401f31
Registers eax=00000000 cs=015f etc
etc.

Can anyone help?

I had a similar problem, which I posted to the group -
I've cut'n'pasted correspondence - this may help (strongly
suggest you look at microsoft support pages as well, it
took me about 5 days of searching and trying different
things until it was sorted out)

'This is strange, replying to myself - but I've fixed it,
and thought people might like to know how - looked at
other newsgroups re Explorer error and found posting in
Registry Checker (scanreg.exe) concerning explorer
problem - the reply from "glee"
sorted it out - reboot using f8 (command line), edit
c:\windows\system.ini to replace shell=explorer.exe with
shell=progman.exe. Reboot (system starts with program
manager), reinstall internet explorer (I had to do this
from freebie CD which had the software on, as reinstalling
from PC involved connecting to internet, which it refused
to do - ? because of corrupted explorer ?), reboot using
f8 again, edit c:\windows\system.ini to restore
shell=explorer.exe, reboot normally - success !!!!.

Thank you "glee"

Upgraded PC from Windows 95 to Windows 98 (via upgrade
CD).Stopped Antivrus, Firewall,etc before upgrading.
upgraded OK, on final restart reported 1. Unable to
initialise NAV database , clicked OK 2. Windows page fault
stops loading - I have tried renaming explorer.exe to
explorer.old and reboooting (didn't cure it), also
copying .dll file from CD - didn't cure it (both
suggested by microsoft windows support)

I think it's a problem with the wrong version of

explorer -
how do I cure it.

Thanks
