How to move "My Documents" folder back?
Used to be right up under "My Computer" now noticed it's down under
the C:\ drive very unhandy to have it there. How to put it back? Tried using Windows Explorer, but that doesn't 'move' it. |

You did mean the text menu that appears, right? only the normal things were there, no option to move at all. |

That wouldn't do it! "R-Clk the Desktop, Arrange Icons", & ensure Auto Arrange is unchecked. Then, manually move the icons to where you want them. After that -- never select any item under Arrange Icons ever again! You may wish to "R-Clk Desktop, Line Up Icons" after you're done just to be sure they are vertically & horizontally within their invisible grid. This will ensure none overlap, provided you haven't mussed the grid one day at "R-Clk Desktop, Properties, Appearance tab" by messing around in the Item dropdown menu. http://www.pcmag.com/ 's "WinTidy" is nice to have, as it can save your layouts based on screen size. Then, going to Safe Mode & back or playing the Taskbar properties -- which both can cause the icons to shift -- will be easy to recover from. Also, it has pre-defined layouts & super-small mode. There are other little apps that do much the same. But PCMag now charges, so you may wish to Google for it, or try here... http://wittswallpapers.com/Oldies/indexoldies.html That site has Crackup (another PCMag offering) & others. I can only say its Crackup is the same size as the one I've got, & neither McAfee nor avast! ever complained of the download. -- Thanks or Good Luck, There may be humor in this post, and, Naturally, you will not sue, Should things get worse after this, PCR |

Tried using Windows Explorer, but that doesn't 'move' it. right click you should get the option to move it (in the context menu) I think I can see what's happened here (though not sure how to fix it!). Firstly, I think Robert is talking about the "My Documents" folder that appears at or near the top of the "tree" in the view from within Explorer - not icons on the desktop. (I favour EZdesk for keeping those where they should be, but all those utilities do much the same thing.) It always was under C: really, but the OS makes a pseudo-folder at the top of the tree for "My Documents", which is a shortcut to the real folder. Similarly the desktop icon - which is a different icon to a normal folder icon - links to it. It is possible to change the real location of this folder (and still have the pseudofolder and desktop icon point to it); I suspect this is what's happened here. I'm not sure how to do it, though: I _think_ you right-click on the pseudofolder or desktop icon and one of the options (possibly via properties) is to change the real location, and when you do, it actually moves all your documents for you; this _may_ be XP only though. And besides, it won't work if you've no longer got the pseudofolder! (Have you still got the desktop icon?) (I've moved my real location to D:\documents, as I try to keep data and software separate.) Within Word, there's a way to move the user document folder (for all Office app.s) - something like tools, options, file locations, user documents, modify - but I don't know of that does it for things outside Office. If I have interpreted the OP correctly, and it is the pseudofolder link that has disappeared, does anyone know how to restore it? If all else fails, rename it by adding a "!" to the start of the name - that will at least make it appear _just_ under C:, rather than way down among the Ms. -- J. P. Gilliver.
