Does the folder you have found have the same icon as any other folder

The icon on the Desktop looks like a partially open folder with papers
slightly poking out, and there is no small arrow indicating this is a
shortcut. rt-clk properties says the icon is a shortcut to C:|My
Documents

The folder in C drive if changed to icons appears the same, small
folder with papers sticking out. And says the MSDOS name is MYDOCU~1

Does not appear to be any change there. Just wrong place on my tree.

This is _very_ odd!

What is the folder's DOS (8.3) name? You can find that under it's
properties - at least, if it's behaving as a normal folder. For example,
"My Programs" will have a DOS filename something like MYPROG~1 (check a
normal folder - but one with a long name or a space in it - to see how
this _should_ work).

Assuming you have Word, did you try changing the file location of user
documents from within it? (Though as I said, I don't know if this moves
the My Documents folder for non-Office purposes.)

I actually emptied the folder due to the stupidity of someone to have
Win98 slow down when one actually tries to 'use' this folder.

It contains two empty folders My Pictures and My Music
and miscellaneous files, but not a single .doc file there.

I just keep My Documents around because it is the default download for
almost everything. Download to it, then rename and move to the
appropriate folder.

And, what' with that stupid "My"? Should have been Documents, Music,
Pictures Is there really any new information imparted by adding My,
except to screw things up due to the space

Did you check:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Curre ntVersion\Explorer
ShellState

The "default" is:
1C 00 00 00 A7 02 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 01 00 00 00
0A 00 00 00
{watch out for the wrapped line}

If you changed or added extra explorer columns, changed the menu, or
held the Ctrl down [purposely or accidentally] while closing Explorer,
the values are saved.
You can TRY holding the control key again and clicking the close X,
sometimes that clears the issue while leaving your other modifications
intact, if not try the default and then reset/tweak Explorer to what you
had. NOTE: your registry line will likely NOT look like the default, and
certainly won't after you re-tweak it.

I know there were other addressable angles on this problem, but... ah,
what was I talking about... oh yeah, check your folder settings too.
Sometimes a global change [like custom to other] and back again will
correct issues similar to this.

If the desktop icon is missing, try recreating it.

Sounds like you have a very odd problem. I had thought it had somehow
not become the special My Documents folder, but the fact that it still
has the special icon (open folder with something in it) suggests this is
not the case.

(I assume "designed" is the missing word there?)

When you say almost everything, I assume you mean Microsoft products -
Internet Explorer, and probably Outlook (Express or not); I can't think
of much else that downloads. With Firefox, and I think even with O(E)
and IE, you can specify where they download (or have them ask every
time, which is how I have Firefox and Turnpike set), though MyDocs may
indeed be the default.

And, what' with that stupid "My"? Should have been Documents, Music,
Pictures Is there really any new information imparted by adding My,

Of course it should. It's part of some effort to give you a warm fuzzy
feeling about the computer (which I think is still the case into Vista
and beyond; it certainly is in XP). And there's My Computer too of
course.

You can rename most of them.

Other things to try:

Delete and recreate the folder (if it won't let you, do it from DOS,
which I presume you know how to start in) - it will probably recreate it
next Windows.

Move it by the approved method (not sure in '98: in XP it's just in the
properties of the desktop icon, there's a box called Target you can type
into. If it isn't as simple as that in '98, I believe there is still a
way, though) - try using a folder that exists, and one that doesn't.

After that, I'm more or less tapped out: is no-one else reading this
thread who knows?

OK. I get it now. But I can't help you, then, because mine is just like
yours -- the My Documents pseudo-folder is under C:\ -- in fact, it's
under all the drives. Of all the other pseudo-folders, the only ones I
have under it are Internet Explorer, Network Neighborhood & Recycle Bin.
Are you sure it really ever was higher?

I do dimly recall another complainer like you long ago -- but can't
recall the outcome -- whether it ever got moved up or not. Maybe read
through some of these, & report back with a plan...

http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q...q i=&aql=&oq=
Google finds about 13,300 for "{450D8FBA-AD25-11D0-98A8-0800361B1103}
sortorderindex"

Here is what mine looks like, but I'm loath to experiment on my own...

HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\{450D8FBA-AD25-11D0-98A8-0800361B1103}
SortOrderIndex 0x00000010 (16) DWord 10

I don't seem to have a SortOrderIndex field for any other pseudo-folder
but that one.

My question has nothing to do with the icons as shown on the
Desktop. But, thank you for the instructions to line up the Desktop
icons. Didn't know that was available.

You are welcome. I actually keep one icon out of the grid with
WinTidy -- but it's far away from the others!

(The grid it puts them on is determined by two settings under display
properties appearance: horizontal icon spacing and vertical.)

That's a horror to play with!

Windows Explorer is set up to list details. I do NOT use icons. I
thought about renaming the folder shortcut so it appears near the
top in the tree, but did not know it was alright to do so..

I see later you discovered that doesn't work for the pseudo-folders,
anyhow.

Does the folder you have found have the same icon as any other folder
under C:?
