Default Lots of Programs Running at launch

When I start my computer running windows 98, it
automatically starts a large number of programs. I have
gone to the startup folder and removed everything in this
folder, but this has not made a difference. Can anyone
help me out here??? I want to have no programs launching
at startup.

The startup folder is only one of the places used at startup.
The places Win9x uses to load at Startup:

-the load= and run= lines in the win.ini,
-the [386Enh] section of the SYSTEM.INI (.386 and .vxd files),
-the Startup folder, C:\WINDOWS\Start Menu\Programs\StartUp
-the AllUsers folder C:\Windows\All Users\Start Menu\Programs\Startup

-the registry keys (in order of likeliness)
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Curr entVersion\Run
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Curr entVersion\RunServices
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Curre ntVersion\Run
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Curre ntVersion\RunOnce
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Curr entVersion\RunOnce
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Curr entVersion\RunServicesOnce
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Curr entVersion\RunOnce\Setup
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Curr entVersion\RunOnceEx
(last one not Win95)

Before you try and have no programs starting, read he

Hi Alan,

I know being the registry expert you are that you like to do it
manually and thus your excellent listings, thanks.

Without much doubt I also know you have seen all of the nifty
little programs out there that 'newbies can use to help identify

I've found one of the very simple ones self-running exe from

Hi Rick,

I am afraid I rarely do it the hard way and I have used this since
Win95:

Startup Manager (Brad Stowers)
http://home.ptd.net/~don5408/toolbox/startupcpl/
(Startman.exe down at the bottom)
This is a free and painless way to manipulate the Startup procedures.

I haven't investigated any of these for years but I will have a look
at AutoStart Viewer.

Hi Alan,

Curiosity led me to just check out Startman, is 613 KB, and which I had to
install it - it's ok and I appreciate it.

Since these two listed below are free, selfrun exe's (no install needed)
Yes please Alan for gp please do check these out and review; they may be
more all inclusive of your list in your first post.

AutoStart Viewer (by Diamond) - No install needed and it makes no entries
to run either, free, and Only 78 KB.
http://www.diamondcs.com.au/index.php?page=asviewer

Also a bit fancier in one way, 132 KB, free, is AutoRuns (by Sysinternals)
Also No install is needed to run.

Hi,
also be aware that some programs can put themselves in your startup folder
with a positive hidden attribute (so you won't see them)

to check this, you will have to have "show all files" selected from the
windows explorer Tools/FolderOptions/View menu item.
