I previously had downloaded FOXIT which worked well on the Win98 to
open the 'new' pdf files.
I went to this website and downloaded PDFCreator-0_9_8_setup.exe [only
took an hour on the dialup connection!]
So I installed it expecting something good, instead all I get is a
printer that puts out a .prn file with no idea what opens that.

It *creates* PDFs using Ghost [security technique - think it may have
changed to another], or did in the versions I used. You must direct
whatever you intend to convert to a PDF to the "printer" [doc, txt,
pictures, etc.], when done you must then tell it to *create* the PDF
[uses a spooler]. Used with things like Word, text editors, etc. to
create PDFs. Handles large files from multiple sources, and differing
formats.
[gees, maybe I should just write the ad for them, hmm, maybe I just did]

I had already been using primopdf as a default printer to create...uh,
I could have been using that!
Open with FOXIT, print with primopdf and I'm done. ARRG!
Just tried that and it didn't work, because the document was 250 pages
long and after going through everything and appearing to work,
primopdf did not save the new file!!
Will reboot and try one more time, just to see.

Ok, all this installing and running and failing has caused the system
to go nuts! click on an application icon on the desktop, and get
unknown applications starting up! Big clue to something wrong is
that Win98 won't shut off, only a power off reboot works and that
brings in Scandisk!

Ok, uninstall everything. Start over. Wow that took some time, but
at least the desktop icons function again.

Reinstall Primopdf and verify it works perfectly on all my Word doc
files, yes. Open a new pdf with Foxit and print to primopdf a current
page, yes! But,...try to print pages 19 through 25 of the 250, no
way! Doesn't even show up as doing anything. Ok, try pages 1 -25
still no printing. So the problem appears that Foxit does NOT like to
print out to the Primopdf printer.

I may have not printed out correctly using PDFCreate, because I asked
for an output file. I bet if I reinstall PDF Create and try again,
but NOT ask for file, but let it run its course, it will work. Will
try that.

So close. AT least I can get one page at a time. But I still don't
have a strong way to get the text into a portable, copyable format
yet.

Robert

Ah, wow, so fast, doing what you describe would have taken me a few hours,,

Anyway, why are you using PDF *creation* programs to try to create
other formats FROM PDFs?

Wouldn't one of the {few} PDF to {something} creators/extractors
produce better results? I don't know, maybe I'm missing something here...

good luck finding one that works on Win98FE.

Everyone so far can't read the new pdf file format and either has font
sizes all over the place or just does weird things.

I did find one, but it complained it couldn't find a GDIPLUS.DLL
file. Luckily I have an extra one that came with the Motorola RAZR
software and it seems to work. Free PDF to WORD converter ver 1.5,
but as usual only works on older version pdf's

So the technique is convert new pdf to old pdf then convert old pdf to
doc.

Sounds like open with FOXIT, print with PDFCreate, and then PDF to
doc.

Ah, now I get it {said I was missing something}, yeah that might work
unless the PDF is locked {such as non-printable}.
It always takes awhile for programmers to figure out new formats, and
IIRC, the new Adobe style changed the base programming sufficiently to
make the old non-licensed PDF creation/extraction tools in-compatible or
at least requires new/modified methods.
