Backup software--like GHOST

Good friend of mine got GHOST 9 and then found
out it isn't for WIN 98. He got GHOST 2003
with it, that is for 98. But I recall seeing
suggested here, other drive imaging and restoring
packages that people find preferable to the Norton/
Symantec stuff. Could I have a few suggestions?
(I used to use PowerQuests's Drive Image 6 but
found it unwieldy in that it required their original
CD to do a Restore). Thank you.

These work well together:
XXCopy from www.xxcopy.com because of its scores
of /parameters, e.g. for total or incremental backup
PowerDesk (www.vcom.com) has extra functions lacking
in MS Explorer, e.g. allow you to overwrite system files
(so long as you know what you are doing.)

The two together allow you to copy c:/windows and to
restore it by brute force in case of need.

Ghost 2003 works well with 98, any NTFS system and over a network. An issue you
will run into is if you have any newer mobos, their newer network drivers will
not work wit Ghost 2003 unless you add them to the driver list.

Or an older copy of Acronis True Image (I'm not sure if the newer editions
still work for Win98SE).

Just curious why any software is needed to do a backup.

To create a simple backup, there isn't any need.

I just copy the entire windows directory (and sub dirs) to another
harddrive (a small one). The next time I backup, I copy it to yet
another small harddrive. After that, I delete everything on the first
backup and use that drive over again. It takes some cable swapping,
but thats no biggie. I never put the cover on my computer anyhow.

And what happens when the MBR becomes corrupt or a sector or two or more get
toasted?


A few weeks ago I had a major screwup in Windows. I plugged in the
last backup harddrive, copied everything to c:\wind. Then I shut
down, and from Dos, I renamed the windows dir to old_win, and wind to
windows. When I rebooted I the copy was loading. Running that one, I
was able to find the problem in the screwed up one, fixed it, and
deleted the entire backup copy.

And what is the time it takes you to troubleshoot and fix the origination of
the problem which is the cause? The major backup/imaging applications will take
mere minutes to restore an OS and installed applications.


I also copy program files, my email dir and a few other things when I
backup.

Note: When you backup windows, DO NOT copy the swap file, or your copy
process will stop. Just SELECT ALL, then unselect the swap file. Then
proceed to copy. There's a lot of software that people buy which is
really not needed since it's built into windows already, and backup
software is one of them.

Windows, all versions, do not have the capability of creating a sector x
sector copy, backup/imaging applications do.


PS. to rename a dir from dos, I have an old dos utility called RENDIR.
I have lots of the old dos utilities to do things that MS never put
into dos.


Why? Using the command "ren" which is an MSDOS command works fine for
renaming a directory. What are these other "old dos utilities" you have that
MSDOS doesn't have?

v9 is the last W98SE supported version that you can install it to, however
of course using it via its boot disk, the newer versions (v10, v11) will
image/restore anything.
