Default Effect Error in Clock Time?

Hello,

If the computer clock-time is in error what effect would
this have on a system. How close does clock-time have to
be to actual time for any given zone?

Help appreciated.

Ben.

The effect of having your PC set to the wrong time when running Win Me is
virtually zero.

Known effects including possibly annoying those to whom you send e-mail
and also newsgroup postings as their time/date will be incorrect and may
therefore appear to have been sent after they were received (if your clock
were to be fast). The timestamp on files would be incorrect making
locating files changed on a or at a specific time or date more difficult
to locate. Some applications may cease to run if they are time limited
trials and they suspect you are trying to defeat the time limitation of
the trial, etc. etc.

The compliments of the season to yourself as well Ben.

Perhaps one area I skipped in my earlier reply was the area of Product
Activation in so far as it effects Microsoft products, for example the XP
operating system and MS Office XP and 2003 amongst others. Such products
need to be "activated" within a certain number of days of installation to
continue to function. Changing the date of one system on an unactivated
product can immediately trigger the need to activate in much the same way
as a time limited trial may cease to operate.

Also where a user is posting to a newsgroup and their system clock is fast
this can often lead to the removal or non-appearance of their message.
Such filtering though will vary from news server to news server and I
think does not apply to the Microsoft news servers.

Cheers,

Mike,

As a former ocean navigator I can appreciate the
importance of time and relish the detail you share so
willingly.

My thanks.

Ben.

One more consequence for the pot!
Windows Update will often throw a wobbly if the clock is significantly out.
