forgotten user password
I have an older computer running on windows 98. my young
son put a password at the initial setup stage and has now forgotten the password. the result? we can not even get windows started because in the bios we cannot cancel or redo a new password because it keeps asking for the password my son entered. my son is dyslexic and uses the computer a lot. i cannot access any screen except the one that gives options for user password, supervisor id etc, and can do nothing in this screen without the password. has my son totally recked the system? brenda |

I recommend that you discuss this situation with tech support at the
company that made the computer. In my experience, there is a fairly easy way to cancel that password but the manufacturers do not advertise this possibility because, of course, if everyone knew how to do it, there would be no point in having a password. You might also ask tech support if there is a way to disable the password feature. As you have discovered, there are obvious disadvantages to allowing somone to use a password. Bill Starbuck (MVP) |

That looks like the BIOS password setting, not the
password that Windows 98 can set, because it can be bypassed by just hitting Cancel. To remove a BIOS setup password you usually set a jumper on the motherboard to reset the BIOS See he http://www.pcbuyerbeware.co.uk/BIOS.htm#battery The instructions on the jumper to set will be in the motherboard's manual. You can ID the motherboard to get a manual from its maker's site by using the free Everest Home Edition utility from http://www.lavalys.com/.
