What is the default associations and icon settings for JPG/JPEG/JPE files in
Windows 98SE?
What is correct registry values?
My JPEG files have wrong icon (Internet Explorer icon). Looks like previous
program (Image Expert) damage the default associations and icon settings for
JPEG files. I tried change icon use Windows Explorer "View" "Folder
Options" "File types" "Edit" "Change icon" but this not help.

Internet Explorer is the default viewer, hence the default icon.
Why do you say it is wrong?
What do you expect instead?

In original windows-98SE installation, the JPEG files have normal JPEG icon,
its own icon. My JPEG files have Internet Explorer icon. While .GIF, .BMP
files have its own, normal icons. Same as .PDF files have PDF icon, not
Excel file icon. So I want return JPEG files icon back, to it normal
condition. This happens after using badly designed program (Sierra Image
Expert) that has changed the default viewer of .jpeg files to Image
Expert(!), with the icon being changed. After uninstalling Image Expert , I
reassociated jpeg files, to use Internet explorer as default program which
will open jpeg files, but jpeg icon is missing.

1. It is common for defective programming to
bind all data files (of one class) to a new
app: so it is convenient to know how to alter
File Association (see Help file on this topic.)
2. The third-party utility distributed free from
www.irfanview.com is judged by experienced
users the single best all-round utility for
graphic files (and some others.) Try it.

Do you or did you have Office XP installed, and also have/had the Office tool named
MS Photo Editor installed? If so, it does some wacky things to the Registry entries
for GIF and JPG files.

Editing the entries through Folder Options File Types dialog will not undo it; the
entries must be recreated either by removing the GIF and JPG enties from File Types
and then recreating them, or by merging a Registry file to do the same thing.

If you will export just these keys from the Registry, to a .reg or .txt file, and
email them to me, I can confirm if that is the problem:
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.gif
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.jpg
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\giffile
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\jpegfile

The other MVPs are working your question; however, I wonder why you want to
use a browser to view photos when there is this excellent viewer that is
free:

Irfanview: A very good freeware graphics viewer: http://www.irfanview.com/

I have nothing against Irfanview, I think, I 'll download it.
But I just wanted restore normal condition of JPEG(and possible other
graphic files) files, that system have before installing these extra graphic
programs:"Sierra Image Expert" and "Paint Shop Pro") . I even not used these
2 programs, but its leave traces of its bad programming. Currently I do not
need something special to view images. Also, I dont process digital photo
images on my PC, so I have no necessity for some special graphic software
yet.

thanks,

I have PSP and ACDSee and neither have hijacked my file associations.
IIRC, the installation menus for these programs allow you to specify
whether or not they will be the default viewers for various file
types.

Ditto on the ACDSee; I've had it for over 5 years and never had a
problem...... didnt even have to pay for it either, its available at
www.oldversion.com
Just reinstall it every 3 months, takes less than a minute, and the .exe is
always available.
