Default Disabling anti-virus program prior to download of scanner

I have a Compaq #1 Presario, and have windows ME. I am
ready to download my Epson scanner, but want to make sure I
do the temporary disabling on my anti-virus program, Avast,
before going ahead. I have copied out the Microsoft
instructions for disabling ones anti-virus programs
temporarily. Or if I have copied down the wrong ones or
should use some other instructions for this, please let me
know. I have copied out Microsoft knowledge files, 240309
and 816071, assuming these are the appropriate instructions
for this.
But now that I just got out these papers to look at
them again, here's what I notice: Paper, no 816071, does
not say these instructions are for use with windows ME.
So do I need different instructions, and if so , where do I
find them?
Now, i checked the other papers, 240309, and see it also
doesn't say it is for Windows ME.
So please redirect me to the proper place to find
the correct directions for this, or else give my your own
instructions, if you feel you know how to do this, with the
type of computer that I have.
Thanks.

You nee to find out the instructions from Avast, since it's their AV scanner
you're trying to disable - neither MS, nor anyone else controls how they
organise their program.
