Default New User causes original User dump

I have s single PC, runnning Win 98. I must have set this machine up
3-4 years ago.

I wanted to add another User/Login.

The PC had a User already assigned, which was the only persoin who
used the PC.
I had TweakUI able to automatically log on, which allowed memory of
Internet logon etc.

Now, as far as I know, all I did was ask to add a New User.

Start/Settings/Control Panel/Users/Add.

Enter details.

But now:

- the basic bootup, using the original User, has disappeared, losing
the auto logon/password that Tweakui privided
- the dbox at bootup is completely different. Whereas it was a
long shallow box, it now is a square box, with a place for names
listed (although there can be none
- of course hitting Cancel at bootup login time means no memory of
internet logons.
- the logon now requires a manual entry of password, even for the
original user
- If I try to enter the original User Name, under Users in Control
Panel, the original is not shown, but then tell me I have that name
already. The name is then shown, and can be removed. But still no auto
login

I would like to fix up what's happened, then be able to add a new
User, without this mucking about, so that the usual user (the original
that has disappeared) can auto boot

Anyone got any questions, ideas, pointers about where to start
looking, please?

Any ideas appreciated.

with the original username ?

Default New User causes original User dump

vaguely proposed a theory
.......and in reply I say!:

remove ns from my header address to reply via email

Thanks for the reply.

Yes. I tried that. What happens is that I am simply logged off, and
there appears to _be_ no User then. To use the Internet, I have
manually enter passwords etc, because they will not work as there was
no logon/passwrod at the start of that "session".

The Original User has simply disappeared AFAICS. If I look a tht elist
of usernames at login, it is not there.
