How Much Memory
My Win98 pc came with 128mg ram, I have since added 512mg, but the performance has not improved. When booting up it still grinds at the 'hard drive' and I have few things in my start up. I run 'Adware', 'Spybot' consistantly, so I am very diligent in keeping my computer clean.
When I checked my computer it shows that I have 640mg, so I know it recognized the addition. I just can't figure it out - any opinions? "Norman" wrote: How much memory can Windows 98 handle? |

How Much Memory
Windows 98(SE) can handle more memory than the 640MB you have now
installed, but when over 512MB you have to make a change in System.Ini (MaxFileCache=524,288 or less) Sometimes motherboards are restricted in what combination of memory chips and how much memory they can accept. See: Windows 98 & WinME Memory Management http://aumha.org/win4/a/memmgmt.htm Dana wrote: My Win98 pc came with 128mg ram, I have since added 512mg, but the performance has not improved. How Much Memory
Put this line in your System.ini file under the [vcache] header.
MaxFileCache=512000 save and reboot. (you can use Eric P's number also) The reasons were given by Eric P and the link he provided is a good one. Go into Device Manager and under your HDD listing, make sure that the DMA boxed is checked. Also do a ctrl-alt-del and see how many programs are running. If your HDD is 'grinding' either it is failing or something may be constantly writing to it. Make sure you virtual memory is set to let MS manage it and that you have plenty of empty space left on your Hard Drive. Perhaps try a free online AV scan from one of the following: http://housecall.trendmicro.com/hous...start_corp.asp http://www.kaspersky.com/remoteviruschk.html http://security.symantec.com/sscv6/default.asp http://www.pandasoftware.com/activescan/activescan.asp http://commandondemand.com/eval/index.cfm http://www.ravantivirus.com/scan/ [See **] http://www.bitdefender.com/scan/licence.php http://www.pcpitstop.com/antivirus/default.asp http://scan.sygatetech.com/prestealthscan.html Buffalo "Dana" wrote in message ...
