Monitor Problems
I have been having some ongoing problems with my monitor reseting to a lower
refresh rate and extra default monitors loading. Booting into safe mode and deleting the monitors hasn't solved the problem. I did a search in Google Groups and found a suggestion to delete everything in the registry under monitor in [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Enum\MONITOR, HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Servic es\Class\Monitor and everything under display in HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Servic es\Class\DISPLAY. I tried this along with uninstalling and reinstalling the video card and monitor drivers but then I just kept getting default monitors loading and much the same problems. I'm thinking that there must be something else in the registry or somewhere else sending wrong information. I have a CTX monitor and an ATI Radeon 9200se card.(Previously I had an AOpen Nvidia based card). There are muliple listings in the registry under monitor and display. I would appreaciate any help from someone with more knowledge about the registry than myself. PS. I did backup the registry before making changes and, when they didn't help, restored it again. Monitor Problems
........ Booting into safe mode and
deleting the monitors hasn't solved the problem. Odd, as your registry 'appears' to still show 'numerous' (12?) monitors enumerated. Just wonder if the re-boot is pulling an 'old' registry back somehow. Can you temporally substitute with another monitor until you get a 'stable' registry? Have a look in your Windows\inf\others folder for monitor driver .inf files and delete (or rename) them. Then let the plug'n'play redetect. I would appreaciate any help from someone with more knowledge about the registry than myself. PS. I did backup the registry before making changes and, when they didn't help, restored it again. Monitor Problems

Unfortunately I don't have access to another monitor. The monitor driver I have is from the manufacturer and is for Wimme. I tried deleting the .inf file but no help - windows detects new hardware and loads 2 default monitors, I update the driver of the main one and either more default monitors load at next reboot or display properties wont let me increase the refresh rate even though my monitor is named correctly in display properties. Monitor Problems
Just a couple of thoughts, maybe your video card isn't capable of a higher
refresh rate at whatever the screen/colour resolution that you are trying to attain. Try reducing the screen size by one or two settings and see if that helps. Monitor Problems
I have tried doing this and just tried again - the problem persists.
Windows detects the Display Adapter drivers, installs and asks to reboot, then loads again and detects default monitors. Looking at HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Enum\MONITOR, after having removed the Monitors from Device Manager, it is empty as it is under HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Servic es\Class\Monitor. After reboot under HKLM\Enum\MONITOR there is a sub folder labelled DEFAULT_MONITOR and within that folder there are two mo one labelled 0001 and containing info on my monitor (after I've updated the driver in Display Properties) and the other labelled PCI_VEN_1002&DEV_5D44&SUBSYS_9A291509&REV_01_01080 0 containing info on the remaining default monitor. With the Display Adapter removed the listing under HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Servic es\Class\DISPLAY is the same apart from the folders 0011 and 0012 which are gone and return after reboot. My settings are/have been 800x600 at 85hz and at that I am/was very happy -
a nice clear, bright display. The default setting pushes it down to 60hz and its not so bright and a bit flickery. I have the latest WinMe driver for my card but it isn't WHQL signed - the previous driver was but was causing similar problems. The AOpen card is gone - kaput and thrown away. I can't help thinking that something else in the registry is sending wrong information. I wish I knew more about the workings but my knowledge is sparse. The stuff under HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Servic es\Class\DISPLAY is particularily confusing - whats all that Nvidia stuff doing there? Why so many entries? happy - a nice clear, bright display. I was concerned that you were trying much higher - so, no need to go down! The default setting pushes it down to 60hz and its not so bright and a bit flickery. Mmmm. 60 does sound a little low and a bit surprised you can't get 70 or even 75. I can therefore understand why you want 85 if it is the only value offered. However - refresh rate is more usually a 'feature' of the video card than the monitor and suspect that that *may* be the cause of your monitor not holding. Try searching for a few more video card drivers - 98 or even 95. My guess is that the 'problem' is with the video card, rather than the monitor. Regarding the junk in the registry, make sure you've got a 'good' SR point, which you know that works and can get back to, (or use scanreg to create a backup) and clear out what you know to be redundant entries from the registry - but they are probably being ignored anyway. Monitor Problems
Well I've just done something that seems to have returned my display
settings to how they were before. Under HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Servic es\Class\DISPLAY the 0000 folder was empty: I made it the same as 0001. Then I removed the monitors from Device Manager in normal mode and chose Add New Hardware - Windows detected my monitor and a default ( as it was before). Now under HKLM\Enum\Monitor my monitor is listed directly under monitor and not included under Default_Monitor as it was before. Have I solved my problem!!! I will have to wait and see if it holds.
