Added more than 512Meg Ram, now no windows!

I increaded my ram from 512K to 1.5 gig, and I got this message at the
end of autoexect.bat, but I wasn't concerned because on this group or
some other I had seen it discused already:

When initializing device V86MNGR?: Insufficient memory to initialize
windows. Quit one or more memory-resident programs or remove
unnecessary utilites from your config.sys or autoexec.bat and restart
your computer.

I found the message on the web and the fix it said was to

Use the MaxFileCache setting in the System.ini file to reduce the
maximum amount of memory that Vcache uses to 512 megabytes (524,288
KB) or less.

So I did that in the [Vcache] section,

MaxFileCache=524288.

but nothing changed. I think I must be doing something stupid. I
can get into windows by getting rid of config.sys.

Config.sys is he

device=C:\WINDOWS\himem.sys /testmemff
device=c:\windows\emm386.exe /noems
device=btcdrom.sys /D:mscd001
device=aspicd.sys /D:mscd001

files=60
buffers=30
dos=high,umb
stacks=9,256
devicehigh=C:\WINDOWS\ramdrive.sys /E 2048
lastdrive=z

Does any of this use so much memory? Is any of it bad? I don't
remember why I have those two mscd001 lines.

Surely some of the lines are worth having?

I havent been using dos much lately, but I used to use it all the time
and want to go back to using it.

Thanks.

If you are inclined to email me
for some reason, remove NOPSAM :-)

When you go over 512MB RAM in Win98, you need to adjust the system.ini
file:

Start - Run - sysedit
Select System.ini
Look for [vcache]
Enter: MaxFileCache=512000

That restricts the size of the file cache. Without that it will eat up
too much memory and not leave enough for the OS.

Just what might that program do that a few lines in System.ini won't
accomplish?
