Default Direct Parallel Cable Connection from Win 98 FE to Win XP Pro

Hello,

A cousin would like to upgrade his 1999 Sony notebook from Win 98 First
Edition to Win 98 SE. He wants to back up certain files first in case the
upgrade procedure causes problems. The plan would be to transfer the files
to my Windows XP Pro machine and burn them to CDs. The notebook has a USB 1
port, but I have not been able to find any USB transfer software that will
work with Win 98 FE.

Would there be a document on Microsoft's or another Web site which would
detail how to do the above transfer with a parallel cable? I have QVS's
"Parallel Data Transfer Cable" CC326-10 DB25M/M with no instructions other
than to use the software included with MS-DOS and Windows.

Would another Microsoft newsgroup be more appropriate for this question?

Thank you,
Daniel

Thank you, Mr. Ventura. I hope I can get back to you if there are problems,
which some Web sites on the subject indicate there could be.

The settings may be in different sections on XP.

If you have a problem with that you might try this MS newsgroup.

Thanks to all three of you. I think I have found an easier, though slightly
more expensive solution: the Cables To Go's USB Data Transfer Cable, item
no. 22431, described at

http://www.cablestogo.com/product.as...1504&sku=22431

It supports both Windows 98 First Edition and Windows XP, as well as both
USB 1 and 2. The included software does away with the effort of setting up
protocols and computer and workgroup names. The cost is only $16, though
Cables to Go has a minimum order of $20. The same item is available at
TigerDirect for $25.
