Default invalid hibernation partition/file????

Ok I broke down and tried something.
I took the HD out of the laptop, not a big deal, but not sure how to install
in desktop.
One thing there are no power hookups and the cable connections look smaller
than the adapter plugs in my desktop.
This 30 gig Toshiba HD is small....

Well here's where we a Everything I can find on this message, which is
common to many laptops that use the same Hibernation system... All roads
lead to those same instructions you already tried. The file that the
message suggests you run, if you could read the whole message, is "HDPREP
(or HDPREPEZ), or 'AMI Save to File Utility'". That would prepare the hard
drive by creating a special partition to hold Hibernation data. But you
have to prep the HD *before* you turn on the feature, and you have to turn
off the feature to make it let you boot if the HD isn't prepped properly.

In short, I'm not sure I can take you any farther. If there is no possible
power management option that fits the bill, I have to wonder if someone
tried to update the BIOS and screwed up. I dunno, nothing quite makes
sense. All I know is that it's the BIOS that's holding you up, and it's
holding you up because it can't find the hibernation partition.

Hmmm... I suppose you could try taking out the HD, putting it into a
desktop, and run the HDPREP program, then put it back in the laptop. Would
be a complicated operation (gotta make sure only the laptop HD gets
"prepped", which might mean having to disable the rest of the HDs in the
machine and use a bootable floppy setup disk to run the HDPREP utility.

But it all comes back to BIOS should have that setting, and if it doesn't,
nothing makes sense. Sorry, but I don't think I could come up with
anything else without the machine in front of me. I'd want to take the
disk out and put it into another machine to see what partitions there are,
and I'd want to positively identify the motherboard and determine if it
was possible to find a BIOS version for it that has the proper settings...

Just doesn't make any sense.

No need to pay, just download the EXE, make a bootable floppy or CD
installer, reboot to the floppy or CD and then CANCEL THE
INSTALLATION! That will drop you into Maintenance Mode where you
can choose Partition Work. See what's listed there in the middle

Default invalid hibernation partition/file????

It needs replacing, for sure, but we still need that BIOS setting. I've just
seen reports of replacing the CMOS battery causing this problem to pop up
(presumably because doing so resets default values, though why Safe to File
would be default, Lord only knows), for which the solution is, you guessed
it, turn off Save to File, or whatever.

I even checked out that AMI BIOS string, and it isn't formed normally.
62-0213-009999-001010000-071595-SIS630-1AA0G008-W

That third set should only be four digits. Notice that it's 009999. Suggests
to me about as no-name a board as you can get, which means finding the
drivers will be impossible. Just gets worser and worser. And that model
number, it's tempting to say it's an Advent laptop, or rather a Gericom
N340S8 (which is the base of several Advent laptops in a particular series),
but I don't think so, and even if it is, there's very little support.

Under PM setup I have the following selections:

PM = enable or disabled
Power Switch Type = Suspend on/off
LID Switch Type = Screenoff / suspend
Suspend mode = POS(S1) / Disable / STD(S4)
Standby time out = Dis / 1 minute- 15 minutes
Suspend Time out = Dis / 1min - 30 min
HD time out = dis / 1 - 15 minutes
Fan Mode = performance / Silent
RTC Alarm = enabled / disabled
RTC = Alarm date
RTC = Hour
RTC = Minute
RTC = Second

That's it under PM Setup.

I assume that when you choose Boot when asked at the end, nothing
happens?

CMOS battery low would explain the error message IF that Save to File
or whatever setting existed. There's only one Power Management setting?
It looks like it's enabled. It doesn't have any kind of sub-menu with a
bunch of other PM-related settings? Did you try disabling PM?

roads lead to those same instructions you already tried. The file that
the message suggests you run, if you could read the whole message, is
"HDPREP (or HDPREPEZ), or 'AMI Save to File Utility'". That would
prepare the hard drive by creating a special partition to hold
Hibernation data. But you have to prep the HD *before* you turn on the
feature, and you have to turn off the feature to make it let you boot if
the HD isn't prepped properly.

In short, I'm not sure I can take you any farther. If there is no
possible power management option that fits the bill, I have to wonder if
someone tried to update the BIOS and screwed up. I dunno, nothing quite
makes sense. All I know is that it's the BIOS that's holding you up, and
it's holding you up because it can't find the hibernation partition.

Hmmm... I suppose you could try taking out the HD, putting it into a
desktop, and run the HDPREP program, then put it back in the laptop.
Would be a complicated operation (gotta make sure only the laptop HD
gets "prepped", which might mean having to disable the rest of the HDs
in the machine and use a bootable floppy setup disk to run the HDPREP
utility.

But it all comes back to BIOS should have that setting, and if it
doesn't, nothing makes sense. Sorry, but I don't think I could come up
with anything else without the machine in front of me. I'd want to take
the disk out and put it into another machine to see what partitions
there are, and I'd want to positively identify the motherboard and
determine if it was possible to find a BIOS version for it that has the
proper settings...

Just doesn't make any sense.

Sorry 'bout that.
Found it at Rat-Shack for ~ $10.00

I've got all kinds of 'stuff' here, 4 meg video cards, 5 gig HD, etc., etc.

Default invalid hibernation partition/file????

I'm wondering if winxp was originally loaded on this system.
I found one link where it talks about not needing Hdprep if running XP,
unless I'm reading something wrong.
See http://www.computerhope.com/issues/ch000348.htm

Maybe I should install new battery and try loading XP as a test.
I have several disks with XP(OEM & upgrade) around the office.

"Gary S. Terhune" none wrote in message

It needs replacing, for sure, but we still need that BIOS setting. I've
just seen reports of replacing the CMOS battery causing this problem to
pop up (presumably because doing so resets default values, though why Safe
to File would be default, Lord only knows), for which the solution is, you
guessed it, turn off Save to File, or whatever.

I even checked out that AMI BIOS string, and it isn't formed normally.
62-0213-009999-001010000-071595-SIS630-1AA0G008-W

That third set should only be four digits. Notice that it's 009999.
Suggests to me about as no-name a board as you can get, which means
finding the drivers will be impossible. Just gets worser and worser. And
that model number, it's tempting to say it's an Advent laptop, or rather a
Gericom N340S8 (which is the base of several Advent laptops in a
particular series), but I don't think so, and even if it is, there's very
little support.

Sorry, that download from BootIt NG is a ZIP file. Unzip that
to a new folder and then run BOOTITNG.EXE file in that folder.

My suggestion is to get a copy of BootIt NG from
www.bootitng.com. No need to pay, just download the EXE, make
a bootable floppy or CD installer, reboot to the floppy or CD
and then CANCEL THE INSTALLATION! That will drop you into
Maintenance Mode where you can choose Partition Work. See
what's listed there in the middle panel. More than just the
one partition where you installed Win98? If so, please list
them for us here, including name, size, type.

What's the make/model of the machine?

Received a donated laptop for our local historical
society.
Reformatted HD, everything worked/loaded, but when I
restart system it locks up, no keyboard, nothing with the
following msg.
"Invalid hibernation partition/file run hd-----"
I can get into BIOS, using Del key, but that's it.

I've tried to use the startup floppy that was created
during Win install but no go.
I've put in the win98se cd and still nothing.

Is this a win98se problem or did I do something?

Default invalid hibernation partition/file????

True.
Once startup stops at the "invalid hibernation-----", that's it.
Was wondering about taking the HD out putting it in one of my dsktops and
reinstalling Win.

But, if it's a BIOS problem, will that even help?

I'm wondering if winxp was originally loaded on this system.
I found one link where it talks about not needing Hdprep if running XP,
unless I'm reading something wrong.
See http://www.computerhope.com/issues/ch000348.htm

Maybe I should install new battery and try loading XP as a test.
I have several disks with XP(OEM & upgrade) around the office.

"Gary S. Terhune" none wrote in message

It needs replacing, for sure, but we still need that BIOS setting. I've
just seen reports of replacing the CMOS battery causing this problem to
pop up (presumably because doing so resets default values, though why
Safe to File would be default, Lord only knows), for which the solution
is, you guessed it, turn off Save to File, or whatever.

And
that model number, it's tempting to say it's an Advent laptop, or rather
a Gericom N340S8 (which is the base of several Advent laptops in a
particular series), but I don't think so, and even if it is, there's
very little support.

Standby time out = Dis / 1 minute- 15 minutes

CMOS battery low would explain the error message IF that Save to

sub-menu with a bunch of other PM-related settings? Did you try
