Default My Auto-Arrange is inactive

When I install windows ME, after some while of using, when I right-click on
an empty poing of desktop (or other folders) and I go to "arrange icons" the
submenue "auto-arrange" is inactive.
Does anybody know how I can turn it on?
Thank you
