Cannot login to Hotmail anymore

Three weeks ago, I was able to login to my free Hotmail accounts OK.

Now, after typing in my Hotmail address and password and hittng Enter, a
blank page is displayed instead of the Hotmail page.

This is the process I follow:
1) Click on my Hotmail favorite http://www.hotmail.com (in IE6 SP1)
which redirects to the "Please sign in" link
http://login.passport.net/uilogin.srf?id=2

2) Where it says ".NET Passport Sign-in" I key in my Hotmail address and
password, then press Enter

3) The warning "You are about to view pages over a secure connection..."
comes up and I click on "OK".

4) An https page comes up but it is blank. Both the title at the top of
the IE window and the address bar contain the address, which begins
with:"https://loginnet.passport.com/ppsecure/post.srf?" (I'm not sure
if it's safe to display the entire address here. Is it safe or will I
be exposing my secure info?)

I've been using Hotmail for years and have never had any problems
signing in. I login at least once a month (and sometimes twice) to
ensure I don't lose my free accounts.

Is anyone familiar with this problem? Does anyone have a solution?

If no solution is available, I guess I'll just have to lose my Hotmail
addresses (no real great loss, I guess) and switch the newsletters and
other email I've been directing there to one of my "real" addresses.

I have noticed a few glitches in @hotmail performance this week. Maybe it's
related. But @hotmail is not your only option. @yahoo.com @yahoo.ca,
@excite.com, and @netscape.com offer free web-based services too ...and
WITHOUT the .NetPassport stupidity and without all the ads. I have a
@hotmail account too. It's working.

Eh? I see ads in the Excite and Yahoo! web mail accounts. Netscape is pulled
by client, so I don't know about the web mail account; presumably they also
have ads.

After you login to your @excite account, the email area only has one add at
the top and one at the bottom (and a few tiny ones squeezed in on the left
menu. @yahoo seems to have a few at the main window before you go to the
mail section, but in the mail section there is only one at the top and maybe
one or two tiny ones in the left menu. Ok.. @netscape has added a few since
the last time I used it (which was about a week ago). But @n seems to
have the least clutter among all of them. But I think overall, @e @y and @n
seem to have far less ads than MS's @h offering.

I just logged into my Yahoo! mail account; direct login, not through the
portal page (http://mail.yahoo.com/). On the left, below the folders list,
four small ad links. On the right, below the capacity status indicator, one
large ad.

Might as well continue...

For giggles, I logged into my pacbell.net account from
http://mail.yahoo.com. Yes, I can do that! No ads (I should hope; that is
the same as a paid account).

Netscape Webmail:

Five ad links just to the right of the search window.

Excite:

Four ad links directly below the Folders/Spam Tools column on the left. One
ad at the upper right, just below the Mail Preferences and Help links.

Lycos:

(Interesting; unlike a Hotmail account, which goes defunct after 90 days of
no access, Lycos just reactivates an account not accessed in over 30 days.
Big red letter notice that I last accessed this account 148 days ago.)

I can't see anything similar to the services I've already mentioned; just a
"Lycos Partner" link. But I am seeing a bunch of broken image links, so I
may have a hosts file issue.

Juno:

Left column, below folders list, three ad links. On the right side a large
panel; currently a Juno promotion; but, potentially, a Juno partner ad
field.

Dark Horse Comics:

A single ad field for their sponsor, Thing From Another World. Also, on
logout you are redirected to the TFAW web site. DHC is a publisher, BTW;
they offer vanity email accounts with domains related to their comic book
titles.

MSN Hotmail:

Four ad links on the left side; about the same as the other ad links I have
noted above. Icons, and one line descriptions; you have to click to get to
the full ad.

I can see no difference in the manner in which the ads are presented by any
of the services I have listed. Hotmail is no worse than the others. Even if
you are counting the log in page itself, I can't see any more ads with
Hotmail than with the others.

I wish I could help. I'm getting what seems the same problem, since
yesterday. It looks as if the MSN software is going into an infinite
loop when checking Hotmail passwords. Have they been "improving" things
over the weekend?

If so, I hope they notice and revert. It can't be my fault - nothing
has changed here since yestereday, when Hotmail worked just as it
always has. Weird...

Thanks for at least letting me know that I am not alone in this. Like
you said, where are the millions of others? There must be at least a
"few" others experiencing this problem besides just us!

I don't know where you two are based, but in here in Canada, particularly
Ontario, there WAS a @sympatico/@hotmail glitch over the weekend.
(Sympatico has been gobbled up by MSN so now new accounts are being built on
the Hotmail platform.) Even today, some @sympatico customers can't seem to
access their @sympatico or @hotmail messages.

I decided to try another browser, so I installed Mozilla 1.7.5 tonight.
I am now able to sign in to my Hotmail accounts using Mozilla. So,
there must be something in my IE6 SP1 setup that is causing the glitch.
Will do further investigation another day. Or more likely, will use
Mozilla when I want to sign in to Hotmail. Thanks for everyone's input.
