Default missing wininit.ini

WindowsME. I am unable to do any Critical updates and
found this solution he
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-
us;283069&Product=winme

says to rename wininit.ini to wininit.old but my system
has no wininit.ini file. I believe this is my problem.
Wondering how to get this file, and what directory it is
supposed to be in.

If you don't have a wininit.ini file then that isn't the cause of your
problem. Such files are only ever transient and deleted once used.

Your "Windows Could Not Upgrade the File %1 from %2 %1: %2" error:

Since your problem isn't the result of a corrupt wininit.ini file I suspect
your problem is due to the C:\_RESTORE\TEMP folder having around 64K files in
it which is the limit (2**16) for the number of files that can be located in a
folder using the FAT32 filing system. This then results in the "Cannot
upgrade file %1 from %2.." message when booting. I suggest you try deleting
the _RESTORE folder with the loss of any system restore checkpoints you might
have (not that I think they are now usable) and see if that solves the
problem. Delete the folder as follows:
a) Boot to DOS using a floppy. Do NOT choose "Minimal Boot" from the menu
when booting from a floppy but rather choose "Start computer with (or without)
CD-ROM support" otherwise the ATTRIB command will not be available.
b) At the DOS A:\ prompt, type:

ATTRIB -H -S -R C:\_RESTORE
and then
REN C:\_RESTORE OLDREST

c) Remove the floppy
d) Reboot your PC

Another problem is that the update you were doing was never completed so your
system may still be unusable and the update repeated.

e) Delete the folder C:\OLDREST
f) Check that an automatic system restore checkpoint was created.
g) Finally adjust the space allocated to the restore folder:
System | Performance | File System | Hard Disk and adjust the restore slider
to your preferred setting. A figure of 200MB is normally more than adequate
for day to day use allowing perhaps a week of checkpoints to be available
although increasing this to perhaps 400MB for a few days during periods of
large installs such Microsoft Office is advisable.

Brian,

I am intrigued that the slider is greyed out following your removing the
C:\_RESTORE folder so am posting a few things for you to check.

If you cannot uncheck the disable SR entry found at System | Performance |
File System | Troubleshooting check the following:
Do you have at least 300MB of free space on the drive containing your windows
folder?
Is the *StateMgr entry still present and checked in MSConfig | Startup?
Is stmgr.exe running? You can check this using either a Task Manager such as
WinTop or TaskInfo or by using MSInfo32 (or Start | Help & Support | System
Information) and checking for stmgr.exe in the section Software Environment |
Running Tasks.

If all of the above are OK then .....
At this point I then suggest the user boot to DOS and rename C:\_RESTORE,
something I know you have already done so I am hoping that you problem was due
to one of the above reasons.

It might now be a good time to test that system restore is working correctly.
You can do this by performing the following test.
a) Create a shortcut on your desktop to a file.
b) Create a manual checkpoint
Could you create a checkpoint?
c) Delete the shortcut
d) Restore your PC to the checkpoint you created.
Was the shortcut restored? Did you see any error messages?
e) Reboot your PC
Was the checkpoint retained?
