Default Missing System Tools folder

ms wrote:

I just looked in Accessories, there is no System Tools folder! ??

I just used Scanreg/restore, the oldest registry is only a few days
old. And nothing has happened on this machine in the past week, so I
believe the Tools folder has gone missing some time ago.

The machine runs fine, so I want to fix this without reformat, etc.

How to restore the System Tools folder?

ms

Unless you have updated the SFC repository after all Windows updates

DO NOT run SFC

you may very well end up replacing a newer file with an older version

How to restore the System Tools folder?

1. Tools folders in Win98 are completely non-functional.
They are not required for utilities (like SFC) to run and
not organized to simplify the groups of utilities (as is
default in WinXP.)

2. Folders in Win98 are directories like any other, i.e.
can be created the same way and they and their contents
manipulated the same way.

3. SFC compares files with a database created at
OS installation. Win98 SFC does not update its source
database (as later implementations may do) thus is
likely to mislead the unsophisticated user.

Addressing 3.

THAT is quite true and should always be taken under consideration.
Using SFC in Win9X to compare files generally give the WRONG

impression
unless it was updated to the FINALIZED and updated versions, which

most
users did *not* do.

I just did a search and did not see anything about a updated version.
Do you have a link for it?

ms

BTW: SFC is listed and run {interfaced} via the MSInfo [msinfo32]
application under Tools {IIRC}; it is NOT found generally in the

System
Tools in many standard systems. General usage for SFC is/was via the
commandline.

It _may_ be possible to re-institute the System Tools "folder" by

using
Control Panel - Add Remove Programs - Windows Setup - remove all

system
tools - restart - back to the same - re-install all the needed

tools.

Thanks to all. I recreate the folder and have shortcuts to my usual
scandisk, defrag, and now system file checker.

I may be having the result MEB referred to. The "original" version I
have scans, completes, I see no action.

I really doubt that in this machine, all files are OK. I used it for
trial installs, so the registry is, IMO, got some issues. One obvious
symptom, an install had removed some VB6 files. I reinstalled VB6 but
my favorite cleaner utility, CCleaner, only runs in a very old
version, so some files in windows are missing. And of course, the
default windows had a System Tools folder.

If MEB can point me to the updated SFC, I will try to clean up the
machine that way. If not, reformat.

For SFC, there is none that I know of. The updated file listings [which
SFC references] are created per the individual's unique system after
applying what ever updates and ALL applications you have installed
[which may change the files/versions] from a TRUSTED installation
[before potential contamination]. Otherwise you get the base as
installed by Microsoft which will show hundreds of file changes, deleted
files, changed versions and the like when run on the individual's unique
system.

Oh, forgot this.
To create this new listing: AFTER you get the system updated AND have
installed all base applications you intend to use, run SFC and tell it
to accept all changes.
You will still get a pop-up for the setupx and a couple others, but
those are expected and not generally related to malware, though there
are some related to those activities [being known issues].
NOTE: any installation thereafter may or will be noted as changes to
the listings entries, so its "not an absolute checking mechanism" as
many applications do change versions or file time/dates.

Thanks to all. I recreate the folder and have shortcuts to my usual

I may be having the result MEB referred to. The "original" version I

I really doubt that in this machine, all files are OK. I used it for

That's right, make your own shortcut, or run it from MSInfo32, Tools
menu, or this way...

"START button, Run, SFC"

However, this tool needs a priming, which basically means to accept all
current changes. The "Settings", especially "Search Criteria", may need
adjusting. You may look through the log, C:\Windows\SFCLOG.TXT, to see
what it's done. Also, there is a certain amount of confusion involved
with it, under the best of circumstances. For one thing, certain files
will always seem to have changed. For another, it does not well handle
version numbers greater than 11 characters.
