Missing System Tools folder
I wanted to run System File Checker, read that it is in System Tools.
I just looked in Accessories, there is no System Tools folder! ?? I just used Scanreg/restore, the oldest registry is only a few days old. And nothing has happened on this machine in the past week, so I believe the Tools folder has gone missing some time ago. The machine runs fine, so I want to fix this without reformat, etc. How to restore the System Tools folder? ms |

Yes, there should be two (more if there's multiple OS log-in accounts). What happens when you click "Explore All Users" on the "start" button's context menu? Does the \Programs\Accessories\System Tool folder exist under THAT "Start Menu" folder? The applications aren't actually stored in the "Start Menu" folders and sub folders, just programs' shortcuts. If you can locate the applications you can use the normal procedure to create new shortcuts (right click the application icon to get the context menu). The sfc.exe application might be in your C:\WINDOWS\system32 folder. |

You might also look in Control panel/Add remove programs under the Windows components tab and see what you can find. -- dadiOH ____________________________ dadiOH's dandies v3.06... ....a help file of info about MP3s, recording from LP/cassette and tips & tricks on this and that. The machine runs fine, so I want to fix this without reformat, etc. How to restore the System Tools folder? 1. Tools folders in Win98 are completely non-functional. They are not required for utilities (like SFC) to run and not organized to simplify the groups of utilities (as is default in WinXP.) 2. Folders in Win98 are directories like any other, i.e. can be created the same way and they and their contents manipulated the same way. 3. SFC compares files with a database created at OS installation. Win98 SFC does not update its source database (as later implementations may do) thus is likely to mislead the unsophisticated user. -- Don Phillipson Carlsbad Springs (Ottawa, Canada) |

Addressing 3. THAT is quite true and should always be taken under consideration. Using SFC in Win9X to compare files generally give the WRONG impression unless it was updated to the FINALIZED and updated versions, which most users did *not* do. BTW: SFC is listed and run {interfaced} via the MSInfo [msinfo32] application under Tools {IIRC}; it is NOT found generally in the System Tools in many standard systems. General usage for SFC is/was via the commandline. It _may_ be possible to re-institute the System Tools "folder" by using Control Panel - Add Remove Programs - Windows Setup - remove all system tools - restart - back to the same - re-install all the needed tools. -- MEB http://peoplescounsel.org/ref/windows-main.htm Windows Info, Diagnostics, Security, Networking http://peoplescounsel.org The "real world" of Law, Justice, and Government ___--- |
