Forte Agent can do it.

Tools - Options - Posting Messages - Composition Window - Prefix for
Quoted Lines.

Choose your own character.

Just look above at how using a pipe ****s up the formatting of the
replies.

Just because you can use a character other than the correct one to
signify quoted lines doesn't mean you should.

I made no value judgment. I merely pointed out that there are non-MS
newsreaders that will allow you to specify your own quote characters.
In fact my own use of pipes is confined to DOS and ASCII art.

As well it should be. :-)

Do the newsreaders that allow non-standard characters as quote
characters:

(a) treat quote characters in a special way, i. e. "recognise" them as
quote characters (i. e. treat quoted text differently, such as showing
it in a different colour)

(b) if (a) is "yes", do they recognise _non-standard_ characters in this
way? (If so, how do they know?)

[What does _that_ emoticon signify (-:] So presumably you add the ones
used commonly in the emails/newsgroups you read often, and accept the
occasional misinterpretation where someone else just happens to use one
of those characters to start a line.
