Default Total failure

Hi, I'm new to the group and in dire need of help. I tried the OE group and
they suggested the problem sounded so serious that only the ME group might
be able to help - so here goes...

I turned on my Dell computer, running Windows ME, and noticed all the
shortcuts on my taskbar had disappeared. Strange.

Then I fired up Outlook Express 6 and saw that my address book was empty and
all my emails had disappeared, too. Disaster.

I've searched the web for a solution and tried various fixes e.g. looking
for the *.dbx and *.wab files, but all I can find are the new empty ones.

Does this mean that I've lost all the old stuff, or is it lurking somewhere
in the bowels of my machine and waiting to be rescued?

If it's lost then so, alas, am I...

Eddy

I wonder if Heirloom was trying to say :-

If you can't find your old .dbx files then you've probably lost them for
good, but you *might* just be lucky with the Address Book.

Look for the Address Book Auto-Backup file *.wa~ instead of *.wab. If you
are lucky AND it hasn't yet been overwritten, you might just be able to
retrieve the old copy.

Good luck

Mart

Thanks - I tried that without success. I'm now trying to import an old
version of my address book I found on another computer but keep getting the
message 'An error occurred during the import process...'

Any ideas? This is incredibly frustrating!

Eddy,

Have you tried System Restore?

Start Programs Accessories System Tools System Restore.

Pick up a restore point just BEFORE the problem and the problem should =
be solved.

Unless... you turned off SR, but you didn't, did you?

Cheers,

Zee

Zee, I'm not absolutely certain, (maybe Mike M could confirm) but I don't
think SR will bring either the OE or the WAB (data) files back.

Eddy, regarding the 'old' version of an address book, I seem to recall a
change in IE 4 to 5 or 5 to 6 which would let you 'update' the WAB but
wouldn't let you 'go-back'. However, under the circumstances, rather than
trying to 'import' the 'old' copy, you could try copying the 'old' *.wab
file and pasting onto your new machine then try 'Opening' (rather than
'importing') the file. - It *might* just work!

Good luck

Mart

Eddy,

Just a further thought, if you are still having problems transferring the
'old' WAB, try 'exporting' as Comma Separated Values (via 'Other Address
Book ... option) and see fi you can 'import' that into your new Address
Book.

Correct Mart,

SR does not monitor user volatile data such as mailbox files (dbx, pst,
wab), documents, (doc, rtf, txt, html, xls, ppt, etc, etc.) or media files
(jpg, avi, mpg, wav, tif, gif, etc.) but instead monitors primarily system
files such as exe, dll, ini and ocx.

Thanks, all. I managed to transfer the old address book and am now busily
updating it - a good excuse to contact all those people I've not been in
touch with for a while!
