Default Cannot find Device File

Hi
Don't know if I'm in the right newsgroup but here goes anyway. I
disconnected my Win98se computer which was in my sons room to hook it up in
my room. Now, when i turn the computer on I get a screen that says:
Cannot find a device file that may be needed to run Windows or a Windows
Application.
The Windows Registry or SYSTEM.INI file refers to this device file but the
device file no longer exists.
If you disabled this file on purpose, try uninstalling the associated
application using its uninstall or setup program.
If you still want to use this application associated with this device file
try re-installing the application to replace the missing file.
C:\OP9630\OP9630.386

I don't know what to do because I don't know what this file is or what it is
associated with. I did have my Verizon dsl box and a microsoft router
connected to this computer which i disconnected and hooked up to my WinXP
computer. Any help here would be greatly appreciated as I would like to get
on-line via wireless adapter which is a whole different thread. Thanx for
any help.

OP9630.386 is an XP driver (a note says it might work with other versions of
Windows) for a Optic Pro 6000P scanner.

Why is this message coming up on my Win98SE computer then?? My son did try
to hook up my scanner to this computer awhile ago but i don't think he ever
got it to work. The scanner has been hooked up to my basement computer for
some time now which is Win98 and still uses dial-up. Should I just ignore
it then? Can I delete it in the programs menu being that the folder is
empty? Thanx again Patty

There appears to be a reference to the scanner or the file in one of the
system's start up points. You should be able to find and delete it by using
the information in my standard blurb on cutting back on programs starting at
boot:

My personal rule of thumb is if a program is not used during every computer
session, I do not allow it to start at boot. To cut back on the number of
programs starting at boot, check the programs themselves for an option not
to load. You might have to double click an icon in the tray (others might
require a right click) and then look for preferences or options. If you
cannot find an option, look for the program in the following start up points
and remove the reference to it:

Start up folder on the start menu, the load= and run= lines in the win.ini
and these registry run keys (use regedit.exe):

1. HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Curr entVersion\Run

2. HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Curre ntVersion\Run

3. HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Curr entVersion\RunOnce

4. HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Curre ntVersion\RunOnce

5. HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Curr entVersion\ RunServices

6. HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Curr entVersion\
RunServicesOnce

7. HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Curr entVersion\
RunOnce\Setup

If poking around in the registry is not for you, there is a freeware program
that makes this process a lot easier to manage: Startup Manager,
http://home.ptd.net/~don5408/toolbox/startupcpl/

You can use msconfig.exe, startup tab, to disable programs; however, by
doing so, you may lessen its value as a troubleshooting tool. There might
be some double entries in msconfig--leave those for your AntiVirus program
and load power profile alone as they are required. If you disable an entry
in msconfig or remove it from the start up point and the program loads again
after a reboot, that is an indication that you missed an option on the
program itself. If you don't know what an entry is, check he

Hi Ron
Poking around the registry is DEFINITELY not for me.....lol. I'm sure to
mess something up that I shouldn't have. Anyway, I'm assuming once i get my
Win98se computer to hook up to the internet, I can download that program you
suggested for us weary registry pokers?? I'm typing this from my WinXP
computer now and i guess it doesn't pay for me to download it on this
computer being as I need it for my Win98se computer?? I apologize for not
going into your site, I didn't realize you were suggesting for me to go
there. I thought it was just your "trademark" signature. I will be sure to
check it out once I get this darn computer connected to the internet. Thanx

Hi Ron......me again. Ok. I finally got my Win98se hooked up to my network
and downloaded "Startman" but I don't know what to do from there. Is there
a way that it can tell me which programs I need to start up or do I have to
play guess and play with disabling?? I also downloading "startcp.zip" but I
don't know how to open it. Like I said, I'm am not very computer savy.

A .zip file requires a program to open it such as WinZip, www.winzip.com.
You can do a ctrl-alt-del to see what programs are running and if you do not
recognize them, go he http://www.pacs-portal.co.uk/startup_index.htm
The only thing that must be running is Explorer and sometimes, Systray. Of
course you would want AV programs running and any other program you use
during every computer session.

Hi Ron......me again. Ok. I finally got my Win98se hooked up to my

network
and downloaded "Startman" but I don't know what to do from there. Is

there
a way that it can tell me which programs I need to start up or do I have

to
play guess and play with disabling?? I also downloading "startcp.zip" but

I
don't know how to open it. Like I said, I'm am not very computer savy.
Thanx for all your help!! Patty

You can download the program to the XP machine and then transfer it to

the
other machine on a floppy. You can also use msconfig.exe to turn off

the
notification; however, don't get in the habit of using it or it can

become
next to useless as a troubleshooting tool. I was not suggesting that

you
go to my web site. I put the URL in my signature block so that I can

tell
people to go there and see such and such a tip. Saves typing :-))

Hi Ron
Poking around the registry is DEFINITELY not for me.....lol. I'm sure

to
mess something up that I shouldn't have. Anyway, I'm assuming once i

get
my
Win98se computer to hook up to the internet, I can download that

program
you
suggested for us weary registry pokers?? I'm typing this from my

WinXP
computer now and i guess it doesn't pay for me to download it on this
computer being as I need it for my Win98se computer?? I apologize for

not
going into your site, I didn't realize you were suggesting for me to

go
there. I thought it was just your "trademark" signature. I will be

sure
to
check it out once I get this darn computer connected to the internet.

Thanx
for all your help Patty

There appears to be a reference to the scanner or the file in one of

the
system's start up points. You should be able to find and delete it

by
using
the information in my standard blurb on cutting back on programs

starting
at
boot:

My personal rule of thumb is if a program is not used during every
computer
session, I do not allow it to start at boot. To cut back on the

number
of
programs starting at boot, check the programs themselves for an

option
not
to load. You might have to double click an icon in the tray (others

might
require a right click) and then look for preferences or options.

If
you
cannot find an option, look for the program in the following start

up
points
and remove the reference to it:

Start up folder on the start menu, the load= and run= lines in the

win.ini
and these registry run keys (use regedit.exe):

1. HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Curr entVersion\Run

2. HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Curre ntVersion\Run

3.

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Curr entVersion\RunOnce

4.

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Curre ntVersion\RunOnce

5. HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Curr entVersion\
RunServices

6. HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Curr entVersion\
RunServicesOnce

7. HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Curr entVersion\
RunOnce\Setup

If poking around in the registry is not for you, there is a freeware
program
that makes this process a lot easier to manage: Startup Manager,
http://home.ptd.net/~don5408/toolbox/startupcpl/

You can use msconfig.exe, startup tab, to disable programs; however,

by
doing so, you may lessen its value as a troubleshooting tool. There

might
be some double entries in msconfig--leave those for your AntiVirus

program
and load power profile alone as they are required. If you disable

an
entry
in msconfig or remove it from the start up point and the program

loads
again
after a reboot, that is an indication that you missed an option on

the
program itself. If you don't know what an entry is, check he

Why is this message coming up on my Win98SE computer then?? My

son
did
try
to hook up my scanner to this computer awhile ago but i don't

think
he
ever
got it to work. The scanner has been hooked up to my basement

computer
for
some time now which is Win98 and still uses dial-up. Should I

just
ignore
it then? Can I delete it in the programs menu being that the

folder
is
empty? Thanx again Patty

OP9630.386 is an XP driver (a note says it might work with other
versions
of
Windows) for a Optic Pro 6000P scanner.

Hi
Don't know if I'm in the right newsgroup but here goes anyway.

I
disconnected my Win98se computer which was in my sons room to

hook
it
up
in
my room. Now, when i turn the computer on I get a screen that

says:
Cannot find a device file that may be needed to run Windows or

a
Windows
Application.
The Windows Registry or SYSTEM.INI file refers to this device

file
but
the
device file no longer exists.
If you disabled this file on purpose, try uninstalling the
associated
application using its uninstall or setup program.
If you still want to use this application associated with this
device
file
try re-installing the application to replace the missing file.
C:\OP9630\OP9630.386

I don't know what to do because I don't know what this file is

or
what
it
is
associated with. I did have my Verizon dsl box and a

microsoft
router
connected to this computer which i disconnected and hooked up

to
my
WinXP
computer. Any help here would be greatly appreciated as I

would
like
to
get
on-line via wireless adapter which is a whole different

thread.
Thanx
for
any help.

Patty
