Win98 with a Large memory?
I run WindowsXP on a P4 computer. My old scanner didn't work for beans
on XP, (they didn't want to write a new driver to work with XP). Since I had 2 hard drives installed I elected to put Win98 on the 2nd drive's boot partition and install my scanner there. With much effort I got it done.(It objected to my version of ndis.vxd had to beg a new one) Then I accidently deleted Win98 while working in XP. With much effort AGAIN I got Win98 installed back on and the scanner installed once again. Today I had reason to scan a picture so I tried to boot into Win98 (I choose the drive to boot from my BIOS). This boot failed, said it couldn't find KRNL386.EXE. (which is right where its supposed to be in windows\system.) I had to reset to get out of error, next boot went into Safe Mode. Win98 came right up. I could spot nothing wrong. I don't know if it has bearing on my problem, but I increased the PC's memory from 500 meg to 1 gig recently. This time I had had the foresight to have created a DriveImage backup of my Win98 partition from the time right after I got it installed, so I Restored it back on. no help - same problem. The only thing I can remember that changed was that increase in memory. Does anyone here have a Win98 running with 1 gig of physical memory? Any logical way to troubleshoot problem? The memory was kind of pain to get in there, hate to undo that and risk messing up. Remove no_spam to reply email |

Win98 with a Large memory?
OOOPS!!! Aren't we glad we have plenty of people looking over our shoulders?
I can only blame exhaustion (greatly due to the drug I'm taking now that, among other things, we hope will improve my memory problems of late), and a mental trick that had me reading the query incorrectly. Had a lot of other things on my mind as well, including some very active distraction provided by wife and pups. Now that we all share the same ofice, an arms length apart, such distractions have greatly increased. Twice in as many days (or was that first one only yesterday?) original? Anyway, ask anyone who's known me for long and they'll suggest that I had way too much to start with, eg. -- Gary S. Win98 with a Large memory?
I've run Win98SE for years with 1024 & 1024 DDR (dual 512's). Aside from an
intermittent "Low Memory" Warning, I've experienced no problems to my self-taught knowledge. If you read Tiger Direct, they recommend that Critical Memory is to be contacted for helpful hints while running such large memory with 98 or SE. I guess that this only works for Critical purchasers, because my questions were completely ignored. Peace, gj "Gary S. Terhune" wrote: OOOPS!!!
