Help....I realize this is not an XP forum, but you guys are smarter,
lol. (and a lot nicer)

I have lost all sound with Firefox and IE....yet it works if I play a
joke in OE and so on. It suddenly stopped about midnight last night.
Yesterday I had downloaded Messenger 7.5, but much earlier in the day.

I have checked Device Manager 3 times, and it says Soundmax is working
fine. I did a SR back to yesterday afternoon....no joy. Still no
problems in Device Manager.

I ran a-Squared last night and it said I have 4 trojans in one folder.
Can't find any reference to this trojan anywhere. EZ Trust, Spybot and
AdAware do not flag it. It is in C:ProgramFiles\Network Assistant\bin
and is called "Trojan.Win32.Autoit.b" No such animal on Google or in
McAfee.

I rather think this folder might have something to do with Bell
Sympatico, but not sure. Date of it is Jan. 12th. I am pretty sure the
drivers are on the ASUS motherboard disc, so not sure I want that to
auto-run, yet the drivers are supposed to be OK.

It is probably something really dumb, but my mind is now blank!! Tried
everything I could think of.

As Noel knows, I removed 100meg+ of Quicktime and Apple Computer.Inc
from the registry and Windows Explorer a day or two ago, but nothing
clicks with me as to the timing of this loss of sound.

I think I will also zip these 4 files up and send them to Virus Total
because I really don't think they are malware.

My next step will be to remove Messenger.....but thought I would ask you
first.

Cheers....Figgs

Looked up Trojan.Win32.Agent and it must be the one. Odd that only 3
AV's picked up on it, but according to Google, a-Squared has been. I
will now remove it, but will post on a.c.v. and see what they say.

I have been running with just the MS XP firewall for about 2
weeks....usually have either ZAPro on here or the router. Guess I
better put one of them back on. Still don't know if this is my sound
problem, coz I removed it last night and no sound. But after the SR,
they came back.

Heather:
This is just an observation on my part, not advice, a recommendation or
anything like it.
Whenever I see MSMessenger, I shy away from it like the plague. It may be
personal, but so far it has been effective too.
Hope David will read your post, to help you with the trojan.
With a bit of luck you may even be able to tackle this thing yourself,
considering all the defenses you have set up.
Best of luck.

Harry.

OK...those *suspicious* files were part of my DSL/Sympatico software.
Damned A-Squared. Art Kopp told me.

I am not going to tell you what dumb error on my part caused this loss
of sound or how I solved it (coz I am way too embarrassed, sob).....but
Willy the Wonder Tech told me to uninstall & reinstall SoundMax and I
learned how to do that. So at least I am over my *driver fear*, lol.

He just howled when I called to tell him what the *error* was....and I
was on the floor myself.

Sigh......are you sure blondes have more fun??

Red-faced in Canada, lol.

I think you're getting confused here between MSNMessenger, Windows
Messenger, and 'the Windows Messaging service'
The first two are fein - the latter is not relevant to Win ME, but can cause
problems with spammed material in Win XP.

Noel:
No confusion, just bad experience (did someone say at my own expense?). I
meant the MSNMessenger allright, but not to *intimidate it*. Never was
confronted with 'the Windows Messaging service' and hopefully never will be.
Thanks for clearing that up.

Harry.

In ,
Heather had this to say:

My reply is at the bottom of your sent message:

I have been running with just the MS XP firewall for about 2
weeks...

snipped

Use XP's firewall and the NAT router's firewall and you *should* be all set
assuming you're using a "clean" system as both likely don't offer outbound
filtering and certainly don't have true application recognition so make sure
it's clean. The two, in combination, are generally fine. Often I'll tool
about the 'net with one or the other. Both is preferred if no third party
firewall is installed or configured. Better if you use a third party I
suppose BUT the above combination is certainly lighter on resources.
