why won't write-behind stay disabled?
I've used Control Panel/System and regedit to disable drive
write-behind on windows 98 but it always turns itself back on. After about two or three days it goes back to write-behind enabled. How do I disable drive write-behind for all drives (internal and removable) and make drive-behind remain disabled in windows 98? |

Why would you want to do something like that?

I would think that write-behind caching could result in file system problems if the system crashes before data are written to the drive. - Franc Zabkar -- Please remove one 'i' from my address when replying by email. |

I would think that write-behind caching could result in file system problems if the system crashes before data are written to the drive. - and what are the realistic chances of that happening, when the cache is emptied/written after 5 seconds in Win98? the chance is greater that you'll see a system slowdown without the cache than you'll lose more data (than you would otherwise have lost). The only sites that I've seen recommending this dubious tweak are those dealing with music manipulation - and I have little confidence in their ability to improve over the default. -- Noel Paton (MS-MVP 2002-2006, Windows) Nil Carborundum Illegitemi http://www.crashfixpc.com/millsrpch.htm http://tinyurl.com/6oztj Please read http://dts-l.org/goodpost.htm on how to post messages to NG's |

I'd still like to know why you feel it's necessary?

Have a look in your system.ini file
do you have any entries in the [vcache] section?? -- Noel Paton (MS-MVP 2002-2006, Windows) Nil Carborundum Illegitemi http://www.crashfixpc.com/millsrpch.htm http://tinyurl.com/6oztj Please read http://dts-l.org/goodpost.htm on how to post messages to NG's "Olive" wrote in message ... why won't write-behind stay disabled?
If your recovery procedure involves restoring an earlier version of the
registry then this could cause the setting to revert. Then you wouldn't know whether or not it had changed before the problem occurred. Of course, it's always possible that the registry is getting corrupted, for instance as a result of a memory error. However in this case I would expect that the symptoms were more variable and much more widespread. Consider what utilities you are running that might be trying to 'optimise' your system behind your back, or utilities that need to manipulate Windows' settings for their own purposes, such as diagnostics, and may not be restoring things to how they were. -- Jeff Richards MS MVP (Windows - Shell/User) "Olive" wrote in message ...
