Default How to determine a Missing ActiveX control

I've got a problem with a Windows98SE system that had it's Windows directory
restored from backup. I'm seeing problems that I think are consistent with a
missing ActiveX control. Office detect & repair & IE6 detect & repair don't
fix the problem. I've thoroughly scanned for viruses & spyware.

Now, there are plenty of tools out there to detect & adjust incorrect or
unused ActiveX controls for Win98SE, like Norton or SystemSuite.

Are there any tools out there that will tell me if I have a MISSING ActiveX
control? Something that will give me a message like, "you are missing an
ActiveX control (etc)"?

Thanks!!!

The application that attempts to use the control will tell you it's missing.
What are the symptoms that you are seeing?

Win98SE, IE6, 576M RAM, P3/650

I've got Office 2000. On any boot or reboot, Office & IE6 applications start
normally. However, at some point, if I start an Office application or IE,
the application will hang for 2 minutes before opening. Adobe Acrobat is
also affected, except that Acrobat will hang and then crash after 2 minutes.

I've uninstalled & reinstalled Acrobat, I've done detect & repair on Office
and IE, I've been thorough in scanning for viruses & spyware. It's not heat
related.

Basically, at some point an application does SOMETHING that affects the
startup of these applications. Running applications are not affected.

Here's a quirk of IE6 when this happens: "File New Window" is not
affected by the 2 minute delay, but all other methods of opening IE6 are.

Any clues???

Stick with Richards, really, BUT...

My Office 2000 used to hang and die until I applied all 75 megs of
updates for Office. Have you?
http://office.microsoft.com/ProductUpdates/default.aspx

Windows\Downloaded Program Files folder will have your ActiveX
controls. Those marked damaged should be removed with right click
choice, when you need it, it will redownload and reinstall. Not a big
problem and I doubt this is where the hang up is.

Try Script package and test your Java.

It could be a damaged ActiveX control, or it could be any other component.
Without more specific diagnosis there's no way to tell. Does Adobe provide
any usable message when it crashes? The usual reason for a delay like this
is something attempting to access a network resource, such as across the LAN
or Internet, and the resource is not available. Viruses and trojans behave
like this, hence your scan to be sure you are not infected It can be as
simple as a file listed in the Most Recently Used file list that is on a
network resource that is no longer accessible. About the only thing I can
suggest is that you try to pin the exact occurrence of the event down,
perhaps by removing items that are starting automatically at boot time, or
removing unnecessary hardware, to see if you can identify anything that
affects the behaviour.

While I don't think Activex is any more likely than any other components, if
you want to follow through on that suspicion you could start at:

Bill,

Try Start Run and enter dxdiag.

That does a DirectX diagnostic - NOT an ActiveX diagnostic.
