DVD has been removed but still shows in system files
I'm trying to intall XP from 98SE, but the system compatibility check keeps
hanging on 'DVD Movie Player'. I used to have a DVD player on this computer, but it has been removed and the software has been uninstalled. How do I remove all traces of this DVD player from the system files so that the compatibility check stops hanging and I can do my upgrade to XP? |

Start in Safe Mode:
-Start the computer and hold down the CTRL key till the Windows 98 Startup menu (boot menu) appears. -Use the arrow keys to select "Safe Mode" and press Enter. Open Device Manager: -Right-click "My Computer", click Properties from the menu that appears. -On the System properties sheet, click the Device Manager tab. Look for your DVD drive in Device Manager...it should be under the CDROM category when you expand it. If found, select it and click the Remove button, then click OK all the way out. Restart in normal mode, by clicking Start Shutdown Restart. See if that helps. -- Glen Ventura, MS MVP W95/98 Systems http://dts-l.org/goodpost.htm "Trish" wrote in message ... I've already checked in Device Manager, and the DVD doesn't show up there.

Have you searched the Registry for entries pertaining to the DVD Player software?

In addition to the Registry as Glee suggests, take a look in...
"C:\Windows\Inf"... for something pertaining to the DVD. -- Thanks or Good Luck, There may be humor in this post, and, Naturally, you will not sue, should things get worse after this, PCR "Trish" wrote in message ... | Yes, I checked in Safe Mode. | | "Brian A." wrote: | | Did you check in Safe Mode as Glen suggested? | | -- | | Brian A. | | Conflicts start where information lacks. | http://www.dts-l.org/goodpost.htm | | | "Trish" wrote in message ... | I've already checked in Device Manager, and the DVD doesn't show up there. | | "glee" wrote: | | Start in Safe Mode: | -Start the computer and hold down the CTRL key till the Windows 98 Startup menu | (boot menu) appears. | -Use the arrow keys to select "Safe Mode" and press Enter. | | Open Device Manager: | -Right-click "My Computer", click Properties from the menu that appears. | -On the System properties sheet, click the Device Manager tab. | | Look for your DVD drive in Device Manager...it should be under the CDROM category | when you expand it. I will check the c:\windows\inf... as suggested. I don't know enough about
the registry to know what to look for there. "PCR" wrote: In addition to the Registry as Glee suggests, take a look in... I found two files, inf\dvd.inf and inf\infback\dvd.inf, which I removed. I
rebooted and tried again, and the Win XP compatibility checker still hangs at 'DVD Movie Player'. I also found two other files, c:\windows\system\WDVD.DLL and system\MSWEBDVD.DLL. Could either of them be my problem, and can I remove them without messing up my system? "Trish" wrote: I will check the c:\windows\inf... as suggested.
