I just want to connect to the internet using DSL

OK...I am not versed in the language of tech speak so I hope I can be=20
understood. I have DSL which I use on another machine and I have a new=20
Machine that I am trying, unsuccessfully, to get the DSL to work on. How =
do=20
I configure things? I am on SBC DSL, installed the software but cannot=20
connect. Have a Static IP and an Alcetel 1000 modem. Not sure what other =

info is important. If anyone has any ideas I would appreciate it. SBC =
tech=20
support consists of people India reading off a script and they basically =
said =20
they could not help; I see no reason to pay microsoft 35.- for this. Any =
help=20
is greatly appreciated.

If you only have a single IP address, you can only connect one computer
directly to the Internet. You should get a router to connect additional
computers.

I don't think that SBC offers single static IP address accounts any more,
though; likely you are getting a block of five IP addresses (/29 in
'techspeak'). The modem should be able to acquire an IP address for each
computer (up to four, I think; one of the addresses is reserved), which
needs to be connected via a hub, or a switch. The switch is preferable.

I should have been paying closer attention. You just ruined that email
address you posted with. I know the CDO new reader (web browser interface to
the NNTP servers) defaults to ' (or
'yourprofilename' in place of 'anonymous' if you logged in through a .NET
Passport account); so you had to go out of your way to add it. Unfortunately
spammers, and a number of viruses harvest email addresses in the "From:"
field of posts to NNTP servers; and viruses also scarf the "Reply-To:"
addresses. Expect SpamGuard to be working hard to spare you the indignities.

If you configure your news client (MSOE, most likely; most people who use
the web browser to access the MSFT news groups use the Windows default mail
and news clients, as well as the default browser) to have a news account,
you can access some SBC specific groups for help. I recommend using a news
client over using a browser, anyway.

To configure MSOE for NNTP service:

Tools Accounts Add News...

This starts the Wizard. Enter a name that you want people in the groups to
see, and know you by. Next...

Enter a fake email address. You need an RFC 822 compliant email address or
MSOE won't let you proceed. Use something ending in '.invalid' so you won't
accidently impose upon somebody else's domain. As an example:

Enter the name of the NNTP server. You can create multiple news accounts in
MSOE. Use 'msnews.microsoft.com' for access to these groups. Log in is not
necessary. For SBC Global groups, for the pacbell.net domain, either
'news.sf.sbcglobal.net' (north of Monterey), or 'news.la.sbcglobal.net'
(south of San Louis Obispo). I don't know which server is right for the area
in between those to locations. This server does require your SBC log in
credentials. Use ' and your password.

If you chose no log in necessary (MSFT NNTP servers), you are done; click on
the "Finish" button. If you chose log in (SBC NNTP servers), supply the log
in information; after which you are done; click on the "Finish" button.

You will be presented a screen offering to find news groups; let it go to
work. It may take a couple of minutes on the SBC servers to find them all;
you should see it looking for around 40,000 groups; plus, or minus. It will
never find exactly as many as it thinks it sees; usually less. When it is
done then you can "subscribe"; this is just jargon for selecting a news
group to monitor.

For your question, on the SBC NNTP servers, I would recommend
'sbcglobal.help.tech.connectivity.dsl'. To find this thread on the MSFT NNTP
servers you will need to subscribe to, 'microsoft.public.winme.internet'.
