Default Upgrading from win98 to win 98se

Is it possible to download an upgrade from first edition
to second? Can first edition be tweaked to work with
software that requires a minimum of win 98se? I am looking
to go onto broadband but my telco advises me the min spec
is se - can I get round this?

No to each question. You need to buy a copy of W98SE or a newer system.

MS can no longer sell W98 disks as an initial purchase so your best bet is
to try to find another source; however, supplies of W98 are becoming very
limited. Go to http://www.pricewatch.com, scroll to the software section,
click on Operating Systems and click Windows 98. They may have listings on
boot up floppy disks, CDs but no license, a license but no CD, OEM versions,
W98 and W98SE CDs, update from W98 to W98SE only and so on. Pay ATTENTION
to what the listings say or you may end up with something you don't want or
need. You can also check on EBay or other auction sites. Be aware that
only paid support for W98 still exists. Here's some info about the various
types of W98SE CDs:

RETAIL FULL INSTALL: This CD will either upgrade W95/98 to SE or you can
install it to a blank hard drive.

RETAIL UPGRADE INSTALL: This CD will either upgrade W95/98 to SE or you can
install it to a blank hard drive; however, when installing to a blank drive,
install will ask to see the qualifying system (i.e., W95) disk(s).

OEM FULL INSTALL. This SE CD is designed to be installed to a blank hard
drive; however, there is a possibility that you can trick it into upgrading.
For info, go to: http://home.satx.rr.com/badour/html/upgrade.html Be aware
that if you buy an OEM disk, it might be customized for installation on a
particular computer; however, this will probably be primarily with a used
disk.

UPDATE CD: This CD will only update a functioning copy of W98 to W98SE.
When MS sold them, they were $20 and came with a ProductKey. Some venders
were selling them and advising customers to use the W98 ProductKey which may
or may not work--don't get stung.

RECOVERY CD: Some companies will brand an OEM CD and call it a recovery CD.
You should avoid these unless it is the exact recovery CD you are looking
for. Many recovery CDs will only install on the equipment they were
intended for.

Ron you do some marvelous work here.

I am based in the uk so I am not sure whether pricewatch
is the route for me.

I persuaded a friend to buy a win 98se system so I could
use his disk to install win 98se. Am I right in assuming
that once a product key is used - it cannot be reused? I
still have my win98 1st edition product key and the key
for the se disk.

If I install a network card will 1st edition do the job?
Are there no drivers or bolt on pieces of alternative
software to plug the gap? I am running on ie6 so this
should have upgraded some of the original operating system.

I recently installed a cd rewriter that would work only
with a minimum of win 98se and a 300 mhz pentium 2 or
higher - or so the box said. My system is 1st edition and
266 mhz pentium 2 and the rewriter works. Is it remotely
possible I could get away with doing nothing and trying to
install? I come from the old school of computing where
using a vdu was luxury and the teletype and simple line
editor was all you had. Although by modern standards my pc
is junk, I have only found one application of speech
recognition software that wont run - and that was probably
because it was poorly programmed! This lust for power is
unconvincing in my books. In older days a lack of power
generated a more resourceful approach to resolving the
problem. Give me some hope!!!

No download available, you can try EBay locally for a copy of the
win98SE updates CD.

Thanks for the kind words.

Personally, I'd keep an eye out on EBay and see if you can pick up the
UPDATES CD (I wish I had bought a 1000 of them) or a used SE CD.

If you are asking if W98SE can be installed on more than one PC at the same
time, doing so would violate the EULA agreement. The same product key can
be used more than once (i.e., reinstallations) however.

As to the broadband question, you really need to ask the folks that sell the
service or just slip a NIC in your PC and try it. I don't know what kind
of a system compliance check they might have so I cannot tell if there is a
way to get around it. It might be that there is system functionality
required of the SE files that is not available in the W98 files.
