Possible Virus Wiped out my hard drive
I had Windows 98 SE installed on my computer and now when
I boot up I get the message "Explorer" This program has performed an illegal operation and will be shut down. If this problem persists, please contact the vendor. Then when I click on Details, it says; Explorer has caused an invalid page fault in module Explorer.exe.....(message source). I've tried article 249191 and related articles, to no avail. I tried to install the .old Explorer files and it says cannot find files. I do believe that a virus has wiped out all my Win 98 SE files. How can I format and re- install from my Windows 98 SE CD? Thank you Anyone, John |

I had Windows 98 SE installed on my computer and now when I boot up I get the message "Explorer" This program has performed an illegal operation and will be shut down. If this problem persists, please contact the vendor. Then when I click on Details, it says; Explorer has caused an invalid page fault in module Explorer.exe.....(message source). Try these, and report back: - Safe Mode - normal mode but with all startup items in MSConfig suppressed To get into Windows without Explorer running, edit SYSTEM.INI in the Windows base dir and change this... shell=explorer.exe ....to this... ; shell=explorer.exe shell=taskman.exe ....then go run, explorer to run it as an app. I've tried article 249191 and related articles, to no avail. I tried to install the .old Explorer files and it says cannot find files. I do believe that a virus has wiped out all my Win 98 SE files. Hardly - you won't be that far into Windows if so. However it's quite possible that you have active malware, or that system files are damaged, or that your hardware is flaky, or that there's some buggy integration into Explorer that's messing you up. So: 1) Check your hardware 2) Formally scan for viruses and other malware 3) Check C:\SCANDISK.LOG for damaged files that were "fixed" 4) Check your antivirus's log to see if any files were "cleaned" Clickfood: http://cquirke.mvps.org/9x/bthink.htm - "before you think" http://cquirke.mvps.org/9x/virtest.htm - formal virus scanning How can I format and re-install from my Windows 98 SE CD? Troubleshoot, don't carpet-bomb. -------------------- ----- ---- --- -- - - - - Reality is that which, when you stop believing in it, does not go away (PKD) -------------------- ----- ---- --- -- - - - - |
