Default Exception 06 error re-starting Windows after latest Microsoft update

I updated my windows 98SE last weekend after I received a
critical update notice from Microsoft. This was one of
the latest patches to prevent hackers from getting into
the system. I downloaded the upgrade, but when the system
restarted, I got the follwing message :

An Exceptin 06 has occurered at 028:0000017 in Vxd---.
This was called from 0028:c1515D93 in VxD---. It may be
possible to continue normally.

You cannot continue normally, and the Microsoft Knowledge
base pulls up article - 190123 which doesn't work for this
error. I can open up only in safe mode, so
troubleshooting is useless...

Any suggestions?

It may still be possible to restore a good registry if this
happened on Sunday, try this

start up, tap the F8 key to get the start-up menu, choose command prompt
only and enter this command

scanreg /restore

pick a date from the list prior to the failed updates.

good luck

I was able to select another registry, I was informed the that the registry I selected was complete and that in order to use that last saved registry I'd have to restart my computer. But when the system re-started, Windows would not re-start. Will re-booting my computer with a windows 98 disk in the C drive cause me to lose everyting already stored on my hard drive? Is there another option?

It appear all your registry files are corrupt, FYI windows retains 5 good
registries so you have a "window of opportunity" lasting 5 days to
restore a good one.
Reinstalling win98 over the top of your existing corrupt windows may fix
the problem, however be aware
there is NO GUARANTEE that this will work, it is possible to loose the
lot.
I would recommend you put the HDD into another working PC and move
your data to it's HDD, then format and install windows again on your
PC.
Once you are satisfied all is well , copy your data back, how you
do it depends on the available tools - burn to CD if a CDRW is
present on the "good" PC, or do the HDD shuffle in reverse.
