Failing miserably to network 2 PCs
"Zippy" wrote in message ... Well I went back to the Realtek site and downloaded the driver again and after a few initial problems the new driver has loaded. Went back through the recommended procedures for setting up ICS but still no dice. Zippy "Haggis" wrote in message ... "Zippy" wrote in message ... Yes I did try that but had to restore the old driver when the PC wouldn't boot after installing the new driver (and I did try it three times with the same result each time). Zippy "Tony" wrote in message ... "Zippy" wrote in message ... Yep. Been to both of those. The bit where it says what it should look like when ICS is installed is exactly what I see but still no joy so maybe something else is causing the problem - but I can't work out what. However I've a suspicion that the onboard NIC on PC1 may be the cause of the problem as although it appears ok in the device manager and in the network properties, it doesn't appear when I do a IPCONFIG /ALL command. I'm sure it must be a clue but I can't work out what it's telling me :-(. Zippy Have you tried installing updated driver for the NIC? do you have another card to try? (disable onboard nic) boot into safe mode and make sure you have no "ghost" copies of any other network cards...(device manager) |

Tried to set up ICS and the LAN with a (borrowed) router today. But with
that neither PC could see the other and PC 1 couldn't see the internet so things were even worse :-( Who said a router would make things easier? ;- I've gone back to the original configuration now (well the Win98 se to Win98 se set-up) now and can get each PC to talk to each other via the NETBEUI protocol (but not TCP/IP) and I can get PC1 to talk to the internet. I just hate to give up on something that should be feasible. No mere machine is going to beat me! (He said with trepidation). Zippy "Haggis" wrote in message ... "Zippy" wrote in message ... Thanks to both of you. I'll have a look over the weekend at both sites. As for the crossover cable - I certainly hope it is ok as it is brand new ;-) I'll let you know how I get on. Zippy "Haggis" wrote in message ... "Stace" wrote in message ... "Haggis" wrote in message ... "Zippy" wrote in message ... Thanks for that Stace. Tried it but still no joy :-( Is there anything else I should set manually rather than allow the machine to decide? snip Make sure both machines have unique names, belong to the same workgroup, are using TCP/IP and have unique IP addresses that belong to the same subnet (e.g. PC#1-IP=192.168.0.1, PC#2-IP=192.168.0.2, subnet mask for both = 255.255.255.0). Loads of helpful info at www.wown.com Stace. and here : http://www.practicallynetworked.com/sharing/ and just something to think on....a router would make your life so much easier : |

I've still got to re-try the router without ICS but the winsock reset left
me without any internet connection all - presumably my ISP uses one or more of those keys for their own settings. One further question: When I do an IPCONFIG/ ALL command should I be able to see both the Realtek NIC and the onboard Realtek device? Currently I can only see the card and not the onboard device. Both show up in the device manager however. Zippy "Haggis" wrote in message ... "Zippy" wrote in message ... Tried to set up ICS and the LAN with a (borrowed) router today. "Haggis" wrote in message ... did you reinstall tcp/ip as directed ? Yes. I did. you should only have the active NIC if the onboard is disabled ...remove the onboard from device manager , make sure it is disabled and see if it redetects(it should not) Unfortunately Good ol' Windows does redetect it - every time. this may be part of the problem (i think i mentioned removing all NIC references in device manager in safe mode to make sure you do not have "ghosts") Been there. Done that. No ghosts. Have got another NIC card to try now in combination with the first card to see if that gives me any joy. I'll let you know later what happens on that front. Zippy |
