Unhappy Selecting USB Ports

I have windows 98 and usually connect to Epsom Stylus colour 760 printer via a Parallel connection. (Pin connection using LPT1 Port location) I want to use a USB cable instead.
I have connected to the PC USB Port and the USB Port on the printer. However the message appears connection failure. I have re installed the printer hardware and selected printer software Win98 with no success.I have tried COM1 to no avail. Can anyone assist please?

Turn off the printer and then remove both the printer from Control Panel,
Printers and remove the software from Control Panel, Add remove programs.

Now install the software for the printer and when it says "searching for the
printer", then turn on the printer that is now connected to the USB port.

A port should be created by the installation for the USB connection.

Is USB installed and operating properly.? For instance, can you use other
USB devices in the port you are connecting the printer to?

USB installation is a separate process from printer installation.
