Default NDIS Hotfix

MS KB # 312108 offers the MS unofficial hotfix
for a divide-by-zero error when installing Win98
to CPUs faster than 2.1 GHz. The error occurs
in the Network Driver Interface Specification driver.

The hotfix must be requested by voice to MS
at 1 866 727 23389 (extra digit optional: 2338 is French language)
and arrives by email as an EXE file under 220 kb.

But what does this EXE do? I wish to transfer everything
including Win98 over to a new fast PC, where I cannot
yet instal Win98 because of the NDIS error. So I got the
hotfix email on the slow old PC -- and I am not going to
run it until I know it will not interfere with the old PC's
operation . . . The whole " Installation Instructions" read
"1. If this hotfix was delivered with hfx.exe then it can be installed by
running
hfx.exe from the appropriate platform directory. "

So what happens if I run this EXE? Does it create
a new file I can put on a floppy and run on the new
PC before installing Win98 -- or should I run this
EXE on the new PC ?

It just replaces a file.
This is from the install notes:

"Start the target system in Safe-Mode and run the executable. It will
replace
the existing ndis.vxd with a fixed version.

Once the patch is applied, when subsequent changes are made to the network
properties of the target system, be sure NOT to let it replace the patched
ndis.vxd file. If this file is replaced, you will need to re-run the
patch."

Thanks for this documentation -- not found in the
TXT emailed from MS (!) I sought advice since
failing to instal Win98 on a new fast system
(2.8 GHz) which was looping by failing to reboot
after stage 3 of SETUP. On reboot into Safe
Mode I found Network was the only item
showing in Device Manager -- no monitor,
drives, video card or anything else. See
also thread about ATMSYS.DRV.
