(9-11-2010) No more NNTP on Microsoft msnews.microsoft.com is still hosting 134 groups, down from it's last count of about 214. The server privatenews.microsoft.com is still available. It requires username and password to access. (For those talented people who produce some stunning efforts) Not sure I understand that. |

The newsgroup was created with the expressed purpose of allowing people to share stationery without the limitations of the 100KB limit on the public interface. (Most of the "stationery", created using OE and WLM by the participants is brilliant.) |

The server privatenews.microsoft.com is still available. It requires username and password to access. Not so. I just logged in and read microsoft.public.inetserver.asp.general with no uerid or password. -- Tim Slattery http://members.cox.net/slatteryt |

Perhaps you've already entered a user-name / password into your usenet client so you don't see the prompt for those items when you try to access that server. I can tell you that privatenews.microsoft.com definately does prompt for a user-name and password before it allows you to pull down it's list of newsgroups. And according to this: http://www.microsoft.com/athome/secu...s/default.mspx Microsoft is claiming that that server does or will prompt for username/password: ============ Note: To view these newsgroups with Outlook Express or another NNTP newsreader, you might be required to log on using the following information: Server: privatenews.microsoft.com Account name: privatenews\spyware Password: spyware (case-sensitive) ============ And it's also talked about he http://www.vistax64.com/vista-mail/1...osoft-com.html =============== My MS partner ID and password won't get me access to the privatenews.microsoft.com NNTP server. Where or how can I obtain credentials to access these groups? You might have to go back to your MS online support technician for details on this one. ID's and Passwords for the private newsgroups are supplied by Microsoft. =============== This document contains the following instructions: ================= On the Internet News Server Name Page, enter "privatenews.microsoft.com" and check the box "My news server requires me to log on". Click 'Next'. For account name, enter "privatenews\crm3earlyaccess". Then enter your password which is "earlyaccess". Click 'Next'. Then click 'Finish'. Select 'Close' and begin downloading your newsgroups ================== So there is ample evidence that privatenews.microsoft.com requires a username and password for access. |

Maybe there's a post or two of this thread that's missing on the aioe server, because it's not clear to me how or where this discussion included references to a newsgroup pertaining to OE and WLM stationary. What is WLM anyways? |

Ugh, I didn't look closely enough at your post. The private server does require login, always has. -- Tim Slattery http://members.cox.net/slatteryt |
