CMOS issue - I think...

Hi I've just installed a new motherboard & hard drive for my laptop after
having a servere hardware crash.

Well, I thought it was going to be all roses because I still ahve the setup
cd that came with my IBM laptop. So, I placed it into the cd drive and
powered it on. Sure all looks ok until the follow message appeared.

0251 system CMOS checksum bad
Default configuration used

0271 check date and time settings

and then it goes into the bios. However, once in there I can't seem to
navigate around properly, I can only use the up and down arrows but not
actually able to enter any data.

Can anyone please suggest something for me to try since it took me forever
to get the motherboard in the first place.

I suspect the CMOS battery is bad or not inserted correctly.

Try the PageUp and PageDown keys to change the values.

Most later model IBM laptops use a Phoenix bios for a base.

Try the PageUp and PageDown keys to change the values.

As Lil'Dave's link stated, it may also be:

Arrow keys are used to navigate (up-down-righr-left).
Plus and minus keys are used to change values.
Users must save values before exiting.

Ususally when your are in the BIOS, the keys to use are usually posted at the
bottom of the screen
