Again thank you Hippy I may be wrong on this, so perhaps hold off a mo until one of the geniuses comes along :-) : Try deleting the file "shelliconcache" (mine's in C:\Windows, but YPMV), then reboot. -- Regards Nigel Stapley www.judgemental.plus.com reply-to will bounce |

Having recently assisted another user with what appears to be the *same*
problem, I can safely suggest that a reformat and reinstall is your only way out. The virus probably totally wrecked vast portions of your file associations. It's almost impossible to even accomplish decent backup operations. Not truly impossible, but it requires so much jerry-rigging and fancy stepping that only a true geek could probably manage it. In order to retain personal files, what we did was to use BootIt NG to resize the existing partition, move it to the end of the hard drive and hide it, then install a new partition, format it and install a fresh copy of the OS, etc., protect it to the max against re-infection, then finally un-hide the old stuff in order to retrieve the personal files before wiping it off the drive and, finally, converting the newly emptied space to a second storage partition. -- Gary S. Ingeborg,
Yes it is under windows and I tried the other .reg you posted. It also was succesfull, but failed to fix things. I know its time for a reload, but I have been putting it off because of long hours at work. Thanks again for your time and help Hippy "Ingeborg" wrote in message ... I don't know how safe this is but I've done it a few times in the past for swapping data. Unplug the CD-Rom and plug in the old HD (switch the settings in CMOS) reboot Drag and drop files you want to keep in a folder on your good HD. Thanks for the help..... I like this place Hippy |

All I know is that whatever had infected the system trashed many, many file
associations, to the extent that each item that was repaired only revealed more items that needed it. *I* might have attempted to detail it out, and might have actually succeeded, eventually, but it would have been a real test of my skills. The real kicker in that one was that REGEDIT could no longer merge files. I know that that isn't the case with your system, but the multiple trashed associations is a bad sign. Retrieving file from the damaged system to a system that's in good condition can be accomplished various ways--we did the one I described as we did simply because the user only had one computer and one HD. What you MUST pay attention to is making sure the running system is well protected from infection by the "old" HD. -- Gary S. Terhune MS MVP Shell/User "Hippy" wrote in message ... "Gary S.
