Default mysterious temp files folder?

Can anyone offer some advice?

While running scanning software on my computer I always
see the software checking folders under:

Windows\Temp Internet Files\Content IE5\....

The problem is...I can't find this file!! I cannot view
any folders in my Temp INternet Files folder! I know the
content that is being scanned is OLD! Any way to access
this? and erase it to free up space?

Doesn't seem to work with the regular IExplorer Delete
Temp. Internet button.

Thanks in advance

You can find it by ..right click on button Start Explore and see it
listed right there under C:\WINDOWS\Temporary Internet Files

If the Internet Options DeleteFiles for the Internet folder doesn't delete
that particular folder, then 'perhaps' that original folder has now been
relocated to the C:\WINDOWS\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files
...which happens often by some programs installation, which if it did - you
can put it back via the InternetOptions Settings button, or leave it just
as it is - but either way you can just delete the one that is not in use
anymore.

Rick

Thanks in advance

The index.dat files are protected by Windows from being
deleted. Even though you successfully clear all the IE
temp files. The index.dat will remain unchanged.
There is a process of going in to MS-Dos and deleteing
them there.
I use "Complete Internet Cleaneup Pro" from pcmesh.
I have also used a shredder program to shred them. This
method does not clean them. But will damage them enough
for windows to have to replace them at boot.
If you do a Find F&F? You will find them. There are
three. ContentIE5,Cookies and user.dat.
The ContentIE5 and the cookies are the ones you want to
clear.
Some people want you to leave them alone. I prefer
maximum privacy and prefer to clear them daily.
Some say they are harmless. That cleaning of the temp
files is enough.
It's like...I come into your house and want to know what
you ate for breakfast. You wont tell me. I was not there
to see what you ate. But the empty Corn Flakes box on the
counter gives me a pretty good idea.
That is what index.dat files can do to your privacy.
The temp files are clean but the index.dat still has the
names of the sites you were at.
Plus they can get sizable over time. I have only opened 4
web pages this connection and the ContentIE5 is already
over 100KB. Not much now? But add up daily web visits, for
hours, over years. People with small HDs should have a way
to clean these files.
Index.dat files are the original spyware. They keep track
of your activities on the PC. And that is exactly one of
the main reasons for anyone to put spyware on your system.

R My Computer, Explore, +C, +Windows,
+Temp Internet Files, +Content IE5 and
Delete away all but the Index.dat. If
they are actually needed they will
rebuild.

Do not attempt to empty the contents of the Content.IE5 folder in the
previously described manner; that will surely end up confusing and
corrupting the Index.dat file which will remain, and not know what is
pointed to. This is probably what has already happened.

ONLY use IE OptionsDelete filesdelete all off-line contentOKOK out. If
that fails to clear them, as you've said, then do a DOS Deltree command.

In W98:

Startshutdownrestart in Ms-Dos modewait until mouse is recognized and
system stabilizes then at the C:\ prompt type:

Deltree Tempor~1 (note: there is a space between Deltree and Tempor~1)
hit enter
prompt asks for confirmation (y/n)
type y
hit enter

Hit Ctrl-Alt-Del to close out of the DOS session and re-boot the PC
automatically. Contents should be completely removed, a new TIF Content.IE5
folder created, and a virgin 32 KB Index.dat file created for it.

You can follow the same command for your History folder if that is "acting"
up as well. Simply type Deltree History at the same prompt as above.

If what you say is exactly as written, you probably have IE6 installed.
There should be nothing be cached in the location you mentioned.
Desktop.ini should reside there if clean.
IE6 uses windows\local settings\ Temporary Internet files directory for this
purpose.
No, you can't erase it, it will be recreated upon reboot.

I suspect it is as Chauvin said, that something moved your TIFs. Could
be, when you upgraded IE, you chose to be able to revert back. I guess,
if you do, you get ancient TIFs along with your previous IE.

(a) "Control Panel, Internet Options, Settings button"
Where does it say Temporary Internet Files are located?
That is the REAL one.
(b) "START, Find, F/F".
(c) Enter "Tempor~1" (no quotes) in "Named".
(d) Click the "Advanced" button, & use the dropdown to select
"Folder".
(e) Then click the "Find Now" button.
If you have more than one "Temporary Internet Files" folder, you
may delete the one's that are not real.

If TIFs are not where you want them, here's how to move it to
"C:\Windows\"...

1. Close all open windows, except Internet Properties
2. "Control Panel, Internet Options, Settings button"
3. Click "Move Folder"
4. In "Browse for Folder" requestor:
a. Click plus to left of C:
b. Highlight "Windows"
c. Click OK
5. It will ask; give it permission to re-boot

After this, if you already had a set in the destination folder, it may
not have been wiped completely. Therefore...

"Control Panel, Internet Options, Delete Files button, check 'Delete all
offline content', OK, Apply, OK". May as well click to clear "History"
while there.

Now, TIFs are where you want them, and all is well with the world.
Better check on it now/then, though, as mine have snuck back twice--
probably after Windows Update.

Thanks or Good Luck,
There may be humor in this post, and,
Naturally, you will not sue,
should things get worse after this,
