Default Mouse problems

I installed a Logitech marble mouse on my PC. I run
Windows 98SE and my PC meets all of the requirents and for
the mouse to be installed on my PC. Even though the mouse
works great ( while it's working )it tends to freeze up on
me and I lose functionality of it. I have to reboot my PC
to regain opertion of the mouse. The only pattern I see is
that it appears when my PC is on for awhile. Is there any
solution to prevent the mouse from locking up on me?.

Do you have a ghost mouse, which only shows up in Safe Mode?

(a) Boot to Safe Mode.
(Hold F5 as you boot, or hold CTRL for the Startup Menu.
Alternatively, turn on the Startup Menu at "START, Run, MSConfig,
Advanced button.)

(b) "Control Panel, System, Device Manager tab".

(c) Open the Mouse branch, & Remove every Mouse driver in it.
If there were more than one (& just one is plugged in), you had a
"ghost".

(d) Reboot to Windows Normal Mode.

If it does not automatically detect the mouse at that reboot, you will
need to reinstall it the way you originally did.

CAVEAT: I have a "Readme" that says (speaking of a Device Manager remove
of the mouse)...

Windows 9x and Windows NT 4.0 have the ability to load device
drivers without running the Setup program. Loading the devices
drivers this way, however, does not install the user interface
programs such as the Logitech Enhanced Mouse Control Center.
Using the "Have Disk" function will install only the Logitech
mouse drivers.

It wouldn't hurt to clean up your Startup Group...

First pick one of these to identify what loads at boot. Next, see
whether there is an option in it's menus to disable it from starting up.
If you really want to rid yourself of it on a more permanent basis, then
look for it in "Control Panel, Add/Remove Programs". However, it isn't
often easy to know what is what in there. One of these URL's may say.
Only last, go to StartUpCop.

http://www.pcmag.com/ 's StartUpCop has "undo", and it is more than a
combination of "START, Run, MSInfo32, Software Environment, Startup
Programs" and "START, Run, MSConfig, Startup tab". It can even do a
permanent delete. Of course, first see whether the app has an option in
it's own menus to remove itself from the Startup Group. This is
configurable, and one may maintain multiple configurations.

For investigative purposes...

WinTop will show as many tasks running as "START, Run, MSInfo32,
Software Environment, Running Tasks", which is twice as many as
Ctrl-Alt-Del. Microsoft's WinTop works in Win98, though written for
Win95. It shows individual CPU & RAM usage figures & updates it's
display every 2 seconds. Get WinTop from
http://www.microsoft.com/windows95/d.../w95kerneltoy/
Download it into a folder of it's own. It's a single executable called
"W95KRNLTOYS.EXE". When you click it, it will unzip and reveal many
applications. All of them are a danger to Win98, except WinTop; delete
them. You will be left with:

W95KRNLTOYS.EXE
WINTOP.INF
WINTOP.TXT
WINTOP.VXD
WINTOP.EXE

You R-Clk WINTOP.INF & select "Install". Click OK to the requestor
stating that a disk is required. Another requestor will appear & allow
you to locate the folder that has the files listed above. WinTop.exe
will be copied to C:\Windows. You may go there, R-Clk it, point to "Send
To" & create a shortcut on the Desktop. Click it to execute. Otherwise,
"START, Run, WinTop".
