modem not recognized in win98 after complete install, seems COM port may be different
Hi,
I have just completely wiped my disk and reinstalled win98. Now my modem does not get picked up. From reading other posts I think its a COM port problem so here is some info and I hope someone can maybe help. 1. If I install winXP to test, the modem actually does still work and it get picked up on COM3. I dont want to use XP as its not my copy and Im only using it to test the modem, now I know it works I have wiped it. 2. With win98 I only see COM1 in the hardware profile listing. 3. I have tried deleting COM1 and rebooting, I have tried adding the modem but win98 says it cant find it and says I have to pick it from a list. I'm not sure what the modem is so I just pick a standard 56k modem, it then says its worked OK but stil the modem is still not picked up. BTW - Im not sure about the drivers, I have a CD with a bunch of drivers on that cdam with the PC, however there are LOTS of different modem drivers, so I dont know which to install Id have though windows should at least pick up the modem anyway and then I can instal the drivers for it 4. Is there anyway I can force the modem to use COM3 (even though I cant see it in the hardware profile). I have a vague recollection that it usde to use COM3 before I reinstalled. 5. Is there anyway I can see if so something is conflicting, there does nt seem to be anything shown in the hardware profiles and only COM1 is in there anyway. 6. I have heard it may be due to a graphics card conflict, can I test this? Any help is much appreciated and I can always post more info if its needed. Regards, Scott |

modem not recognized in win98 after complete install, seems COM port may be diff
COM 1 and COM 2 are the physical serial COM ports addressed
to the back of the case. I take it you have an internal modem card installed in a PCI slot. Windows installs a *virtual* COM port for it that won't show in the Device Manager. Identifty the make and model of modem and download its driver file and insert it on a floppy disk. Remove the modem in the Device Manager, and remove any COM port shown, then shut down and remove the modem from the case, boot the system and press the key that enters Setup - the BIOS setup program. Disable both COM ports, Save the settings and exit the BIOS. Boot the system into Windows, shut down, and install the modem on the motherboard, and boot Windows. Windows should install the modem to a virtual COM port called COM1, which won't show in the Device Manger. Point Windows to the floppy disk drive if it asks for a source for the drivers. If it just installs drivers automatically, you can update them by pointing to the downloaded driver file on the hard drive or on the floppy disk. I have removed the modem and found it is a Rockwell. From memory I now recall its a k56Flex (which is internal)?? I have a CD with loads of drivers on it that came with the PC so I went thru the process of setting up a modem (thru control panel) and when it asked to recognize the modem I said no and that I would choose myself. At this point I chose the 'Have Disk' option and installed the driver from CD. This worked as far as the driver was installed, but (and I cant remember exactly at what point this was) it asked me to choose a port where the modem was. I only have the dropdown option of COM1 or LPT1, and it is not on these as its internal. I have also tried another driver (K56RVP I think) but this gives the same problem. The modem does not show up in the hardware config at all as it doesnt seem Win 89 can pick it up without a driver, but the driver asks for the port (ie COM1 as above). I have tried rebooting after installing the driver but to no effect. What I think I need is to install the driver without it asking for a port but it wont do this. Originally my PC came from Time (about 6 yrs ago). Do you know if the drivers you get supplied when you buy a pre-installed PC work in the same way as a normal driver you'd get when buying just a modem by itself. I will now search the web for Rockwell drives to see if this helps TIA Scott |

Go back to Device Manager and look for "Network Adaptor".
(Green Icon) Is it there? Last time I had a problem with a known good modem not being recognized by Windows is the Network Adaptor/drivers were not installed. Once I installed the NA from the standard list through an Add new hardware. The system picked up the modem right off. About the ports. You should select Com1. LPT1 is for a printer. Com ports are named by windows and are not necessarily the physical location of the port. My modem is in physical COM1 but windows has it listed as on Com3. It works. So I will let windows believe it is at Com3. -----Original Message----- "AlmostBob" wrote in message ...
