Default Safe mode defrag

When I defrag my WinMe Dell laptop, I disable virtual memory, restart in
safe mode, then defrag. This should provide a problem free defrag but
Defrag keeps restarting ("Disk contents changed..restarting"). Scandefrag
doesn't help at all; I leave virtual memory enabled when I try Scandefrag.

I have no spyware, trojans o other malware on my machine. I tend to be
paranoid about the security of my machines. I have at a number of programs
I run regularly to prevent that sort of thing.

I get the same problem even if I do not turn off VM.

If anybody has any ideas about what could be causing this, I'd be grateful
for a reply.

Thanks

Virtual memory?

I eliminated such activity by shutting off my firewall,
antivirus SW, and modem. Previously I had shut off
everything except ZoneAlarm and left the internet running
and did have the defrag problem.

Restarting in safe mode prevents the loading of all non-essential programs.
At least its supposed to, so I'm basically doing the same thing you are.
The only difference is that by disabling virtual memory I am essentially
defragging my swapfile because when it is recreated on restart, it consists
of only one fragment.

The point is, the way I'm doing it, I should be getting problem free
defrags and I'm not.

Depending on your ISP, unplugging the 'net might help.

Instead of Safe mode, why don't you try a "Clean Boot" environment.

Thier is no need to enter safe mode to defrag. The reason
your contents will change during defrag is because you are
connected to the internet, even though your explorer is
not launched if you have a DSL or cable connection you
still get incoming information. You do not need to disable
anything within your system, just disconnect your phone
line or cable connection during defrag. It has always
worked for ME (no pun intended).

Thanks for the suggestions, but I'm on a dial-up and am never connected to
the net when I defrag. If I try to run defrag without going into safe
mode, it never even reaches 10%. If I enter safe mode with no virtual
memory, I am able to do a defrag with only 5-8 restarts.

I also tried disabling everything everything except explorer with msconfig,
restarting and defragging. Nope. Didn't work. This is really no major
deal but I was just wondering why this would happen. Scandefrag reboots
into safe mode before it scans and defrags the hd right? Or am I not
getting something here?

No, it just runs the apps in Normal mode but before the majority of other
startup/autorun items run. It suspends the boot process and you can set it
to shut down after or continue booting. Highly unlikely not to work,
assuming a healthy HD.

That isn't always the case, though has been known to be a factor
sometimes. However, there are other processes that will write to
the disk and interrupt scandisk or defrag.

I was cleaning a ME system for someone that refused to run defrag,
even in safe mode. In the end it turned out to be an unwanted BHO
(BrowserHelperObject) attached to the shell.

No, it runs in normal mode. It loads up specific registry "Run" keys
with (e.g.) scandskw and defrag using sage (System AGEnt) configured
settings.

The intent is to be able to run these utils in normal mode, so as to have
32-bit access to the disk (as opposed to Safe-mode's DOS 16-bit
compatibility mode), and to also laod the utils before many of the user's
"background" programs can load. This doesn't keep all processes from
loading though. To kill those, run ScanDefrag in its "Restrictive mode".
It will attempt to terminate all uneeded processes beforehand. Check
the log afterwards to see what processes it terminated. That might give
you a clue as to what process is interfering.
