| I'm not sure why this post didn't come through until today ...

It's been here since the 5th. Have you got an "OE, Tools menu, Message
Rule" that misbehaves?

|
| Anyhow, the "Restart" instead of "Shut Down" problem was
| fixed by replacing ACPI BIOS with PnP BIOS (fail safe).
| For details, see my earlier post (dated 11/9/2004 3:12pm).

I saw that. It's really beyond my experience. I am "Advanced
Configuration and Power Interface (ACPI)", but IT has an exclamation
(!). However, as there is no Resource Conflict involved, I'm told to let
it be by Windows Help. All the same, some day I may try as you did,
but-- I'm shutting down/restarting faily well enough. (Can't say it's
100%. If you turn out to be 100% now, please let me know. You & Shep!)

|
| The following issues remain:
| - duplicate "PCI bus" with an exclamation mark (but system works fine)

Duplicates. The normal suggested solution is to Remove both in Safe
Mode. One may then drop off. However, I wouldn't fool with my own PCI
Bus without doing a fresh full system backup first.

Terhune has often posted a true devastation of devices in Device
Manager. I have it in my "Keepers", but I hesitate to pass it on,-- &
NOT just because he has forbid me to mention his name.

| - system does not wait for the user to turn off the computer on "Shut
Down"

I don't understand. Mine shuts itself off. Then, all I need do is turn
off the monitor & speakers.

I don't think so ... I haven't used that feature before.

If 100% means no exclamation, then it's not 100% here.

For me, "PCI bus" is a stubborn duplicate with an exclamation that
I cannot remove (not even in Safe mode).

If I try to remove "PCI bus" in Safe mode,
the system gives the following message:
"Windows protection error. You need to restart your computer."
Then, I can only boot into Safe mode but not into Normal mode.

Well, based on the message in the "logos.sys" bitmap:
"It's now safe to turn off your computer."
It sounds like the user is suppose to manually power off
the computer rather than just have the message flash before him/her.

I don't know ... it's no biggy really ...

Hmm. Then, all I can think is...

(a) Sometimes the server malfunctions, but I haven't seen it recently.
(b) R-Clk this NG in the left pane of OE, & point to "Synchronization
Settings". Is "All Messages" bolted?
(c) At "OE, Tools menu, Options, General tab", how often does it "Check
for new messages"?
(d) At "OE, Tools menu, Accounts, News tab", is "msnews.microsoft.com"
set as the "Default"? (The button will be shaded, if so.)

are causing it explicitly by removing devices. Anyway, you have to post
more of the message, as there is more than one.

"Logos.sys" is "It's now safe to turn off your computer".

Perhaps the change you did with ACPI BIOS did not go all the way to
switch which one gets posted at shutdown.

No more exclamations in
"System Properties" = "Device Manager". Whew!

I was able to remove the last exclamation (on "PCI bus") in
Device Manager's list of devices by using the
"bootlog.txt" file generated from a logged boot to
locate the extraneous "PCI bus" entry and remove it from the registry.

"Adam" wrote in message m...

Installing Via's 4-in-1 drivers did not fix the exclamations.

Nero InfoTool shows that all drives have DMA=on.

In Safe mode, I was able to fix all exclamations except "PCI bus".
If I try to remove "PCI bus" in Safe mode,
I will get the following two messages:
1) "NAV Auto-Protect:
The configuration files were not found. Using default configuration."
2) "NAV Auto-Protect:
Unable to initialize the exclusion database."

After the above messages, I will not be able to
boot using the partition.

Uninstalling NAV from the partition first gives the same results.

I guess I'll have to live with the one remaining exclamation for now.

Also, my system automatically turns off the computer after
displaying the message:
"It's now safe to turn off your computer."

How can I get it to require the user to
manually turn off the computer?

Replace "Advanced Configuration and Power Interface (ACPI) BIOS" with
"Plug and Play BIOS (fail safe)". Here's a helpful link:

Still not sure why I have the following exclamations in the device list:

Keyboard:

Boot to Safemode/Device Manager and remove all entries for the

set drivers pack and install.System Diagnostic,"Everest Home Edition"

also on that page get Nero Info tool to check that all your drives are

First, let me explain ... I use the BIOS to select between
two HDDs/partitions to boot from ...

The "Allow LPT Interrupt Sharing" option in the "Settings" tab of
"Creative SB16 Emulation" properties is checked for
the "good" HDD/partition (on the same hardware) that
handles "Shut Down" correctly. So, I suspect that
this option is not the cause of the problem in my case.

But, I think you may have touched on the tip of the iceberg ...

I took a look through the Device Manager tab of
the "problematic" HDD/partition (on the same hardware) that
"Restart" instead of "Shut Down" and
the device list does not look clean (there are exclamation points).
Although, things work for the most part.

After comparing the device lists of both HDDs/partitions,
I strongly suspect that the cause of the problem has to with
ACPI BIOS vs. PnP BIOS. The "good" HDD/partition uses
PnP BIOS. And, the "problematic" HDD/partition uses
ACPI BIOS. Anyone know if it is possible to
convert from ACPI BIOS to PnP BIOS? If so, how?

Here is the problematic parts of the device list:

You'll see others mention refer's to a web page for troubleshooting.

In my case nothing helped UNTIL I read the comment about "Allow LPT Interupt
Sharing" as a sub-checkbox under "Legacy Emulation Enabled" found under
"Settings" tab in the "Properties" dialog for my PCI128 soundcard in Device
Manager's hardware list.

It wasn't until I unchecked said box that the problem went away and she now
shuts down or restarts properly as expected

My system is running Win98SE.

When I try to "Shut Down", it does a "Restart" instead.

"Disable fast shutdown" is already selected.

Anyone know how to fix this?

In my case, it was the extraneous driver that
loaded successfully preventing the right driver from
loading. So, I made a backup of the registry key (*PNPXXXX) by
exporting it and then deleted the key.

No, no auto-scandisk or forced Safe mode boot.

OK, then. You are good now, far as I can see. Good going.

| | I was able to remove the last exclamation (on "PCI bus") in
| | Device Manager's list of devices by using the
| | "bootlog.txt" file generated from a logged boot to
| | locate the extraneous "PCI bus" entry and remove it from the
registry.
|
| Hmm. Let me have a quick look...
| [00006F61] Loading PNP drivers of PCI bus (ACPI\*PNP0A03\0)
| ...Ah, I see. I have just one. Looks a tab inscrutable in the
Registry,
| though. However, I have heard of deleting lines out of the ENUM key
| before. Good to see it worked for you.
|
| In my case, it was the extraneous driver that
| loaded successfully preventing the right driver from
| loading. So, I made a backup of the registry key (*PNPXXXX) by
| exporting it and then deleted the key.
|
|
| | But, I'd be happy to leave well enough alone at this point.
|
| Could be best, let it be, so long as there is no Auto-Scandisk
after.
|
| No, no auto-scandisk or forced Safe mode boot.

| | | | I'm not sure why this post didn't come through until today
....
| | |
| | | It's been here since the 5th. Have you got an "OE, Tools
menu,
| | Message
| | | Rule" that misbehaves?
| | |
| | | I don't think so ... I haven't used that feature before.
| |
| | Hmm. Then, all I can think is...
| |
| | (a) Sometimes the server malfunctions, but I haven't seen it
| recently.
| |
| | This is the most likely choice.
|
| Well, OK. (I've lost my memory of when it showed up for me, now,
| anyhow.)
|

| | | If 100% means no exclamation, then it's not 100% here.
| |
| | Well, I guess I'll wait a bit, as one exclamation point is as
good
| as
| | another. What about Terhune's post? Do you want it? I will only
post
| | such a thing by request ONLY, & notarized!
| |
| | It's 100% (or no exclamation) here now.
| | "System Properties" = "Device Manager" is now clean. Whew!
|
| Yow. Excellent.

| | | | - system does not wait for the user to turn off the
computer
| on
| | "Shut
| | | Down"
| | |
| | | I don't understand. Mine shuts itself off. Then, all I need
do
| is
| | turn
| | | off the monitor & speakers.
| | |
| | | Well, based on the message in the "logos.sys" bitmap:
| | | "It's now safe to turn off your computer."
| | | It sounds like the user is suppose to manually power off
| | | the computer rather than just have the message flash before
| him/her.
| | |
| | | I don't know ... it's no biggy really ...
| |
| | Well, opening them in MSPaint...
| | "Logos.sys" is "It's now safe to turn off your computer".
| | "Logow.sys" is "Windows is shutting down".
| |
| | That's right ... there must be some way (maybe a registry setting
or
| APM) to
| | make the system wait for the user to manually shut down the system
| after
| | displaying the "s"hut down logo ("Logos.sys"). One of my systems
does
| this.
|
| Well... I do recall once/twice seeing LogoS.sys. I wrote them off as
| unusual enough to ignore. Almost ALWAYS it's LogoW.sys, & the
machine
| turns off. That's the way I like it, & I believe it should be.
|
| |
| |
| |
| | Perhaps the change you did with ACPI BIOS did not go all the way
to
| | switch which one gets posted at shutdown.
| |
| | Hmmm ... that's a thought ... I've been looking into
| | "Advanced Power Management support" for the solution.
| |
| | But, I'd be happy to leave well enough alone at this point.
|
| Could be best, let it be, so long as there is no Auto-Scandisk
after.
