Files with a WPS extension were most likely documents written using MS Works.
To read such documents you either need to install MS Works or a word
processing application such as Word that can open WPS files.

Interesting point. How long have "WPS" files been around? I have an
old CD with some archived files that I 're-discovered' a while back
and there are 10 WPS files on the disk. I used to have 'Works' a few
years ago but am now using MsOffice 2003, but when I tried to open
these "WPS" files, I couldn't. They aren't that important, going by
the file names, but I'm curious as to whether older 'WPS' files are
not compatible with newer Word versions.

To be honest I don't know never having had Works installed here. I checked
Word 2002 that I have on this box and it included wps files as being among
those for which it had input filters. Your post has prompted me to check on
another PC here that has Word 2003 and at the bottom of the list it states
that it can import wps files from Works 6 & 7 so I'm not sure I understand why
it couldn't open your wps files, perhaps they were from an older(?) version of
Works?

Not a Works expert but I remember trying to open Works 2.0 files in
Word several years ago and had no hope. Not all Works files can be
opened with Word unless the necessary filters are installed and in
some cases, it seems, not even then.
The Word 2000 I have on this computer only lists .wps files for Work
4.0 and Works 3.0

Thanks Alan,

Never having used Works I've no real idea of its version history.

It appears from the posts here and what I can see that:
Word 2003 can open wps files from Works 6 & 7
Word 2002 can open wps files from Works 4 & 2000
Word 2000 can open wps files from Works 3 & 4

Seems to me a bit as if you can easily get stuck with files that can't be
opened if you upgrade from Works to Word. At least Word seems to be able to
read files created in much earlier versions. I use Word Perfect and whilst
the extension used for WP docs changed at some time in the past to wpd I've
never had problems in reading documents created ten years or more years ago
with my current version of WP other than that the formatting gets a bit mixed
up as the docs have often been formatted to use a long since defunct printer.

A good summary.
I have never used Works seriously myself (I assume it can be used
seriously) and also have WordPerfect files 5/6 from 10+ years ago
when I worked that I have no problems with.
