Default slow (15Min) startup

I am running a P3 600 mhz computer with 512 MB ram with
Windows98SE. It has been running fine for 4 years. Last
weekend I installed Diskeeper 8.0 Pro and started having
15 MIn. startup times. Computer runs nomal speed up to
the point I log in and then it hangs up and takes 10 min,
to get to the desktop. I have uninstalled diskeeper and
removed its lines from the autoexc, bat and startup.ini but
this did not help. Diskeeper tech support could not help
(had them up to level 2 before they told me to contact
Microsoft). While starting up I found "mprexe"
and "msgsrv32" listed in the program list as "not
responding". tried to use msconfig to resolve but start up
still slow regardless of which files were truned on or
off. NOTE: computer will start up normal in safe mode.
I have installed Win98 on top of its self to replace
missing files or "dll" but this did not help. Is there
anything I can try before I drop the partisions and
rebuild from scrach

Hi Jeff
Have you tried scandisk and defrag to clear any files errors?
Also have you considered keeping upto date with MS last updates for WIN98?

Q: Why did you install Diskeeper?

Cheers

Chris

HI Chis, thanks for the help. Yes I have tried scandisk
and ran defrag. no help. I also have found that
my "ctrl+c" for copy and "ctrl+v" for paste functions do
not work. I have all the latest Microsoft updates.
if you have any ideas i am at a loss.

Ron,

Thanks for the help. I ran both of these without help. I
remove all files for startup and still takes about 15 min.
to complete. I have also found that "ctrl+C" for copy
and "ctrl+V" for paste do not work either.

Default slow (15Min) startup

Do you boot your computer each day or do you leave it on? If you don't boot
each day:

If this problem is less than five days old, restore a copy of the registry
that predates the onset of the problem and see if that helps. The five-day
limit assumes that the computer is booted every day. If it is not booted
every day, you may have an old enough registry backup that you can use even
though more than five days have elapsed. Any registry changes made after
the date of the restored registry will be lost.

On the Start Menu, select Shut Down and Restart in MSDOS Mode. At the
Windows prompt, type: scanreg /restore and hit enter. Once the
registry restore screen appears, select the date of the registry that you
wish to restore by highlighting it and then click enter. If you see a
registry named: Rbbad.cab, that is a copy of the registry that has already
been replaced.
