Default Broadband connection

BT are adamant the line is fine and we have no problems with the telephone,
plus surely the connection via the hub would not work if the line was the
problem.
The computer is over 5yrs old now, so without any other suggestions guess
its time for an upgrade.

Having spent an age on the phone with BT Broadband technical, they have come
up with the diagnostic problem that my computer does not have an ip address.
Is there an easy way to remedy this ?

?? that means that your PC is not seeing the DHCP server on BT's network -
it's a modem problem, or your firewall getting in the way.
Are you running a firewall of any kind? - are you using proxy settings
(Internet Properties|Connections|Settings - disable any proxy settings)

I have Black Ice firewall. We tried things with this switched off, but made
no difference.
The BT person ran through loads of procedures deleting things in the network
and made sure all my options in another part where all marked "enabled".
She then went back into network and said it should ask for a disk to reload
but as it did not she said this was the problem of no ip.
They started saying yesterday that I was being activated from 8 pm last
nite, yet I have been using their Broadband for about 2 years minimum. They
always ask for the modem model number and when I say it does not have one,
they are quizical, which makes me think its an out of date modem and that it
is knackered. Maybe if I switch to AOL or someone then I would get a new
modem and fresh start ?

PPS
Have since spoken with BT sales and having amended the package I am
currently on, I can get a new modem next week and be switched over on
Thursday. This will hopefully eliminate the possibility of the fault being
with that and if things are not working then, other avenues can then be
explored.
Many thanks for your patience and input.

No matter what package you're on (assuming all broadband), you should be
able to use a router modem with BT! - if not, then somebody has been lying;(
