You all have been helping with the RAM problesm (Windows 98
SE with 512 MB RAM up from 256). After installation of the RAM, my system resources were dropping drastically w/o having a large number of programs open and would not return to normal after closing the programs. I had to reboot to get them up to an acceptable level and to keep the comuputer function properly. I followed the suggestions on the RAM, but I am still having problems, crashing, hanging up, etc. This morning I had I Word document and 1 Netscape window open and was down to 7% resources. Everything was moving slow and I was unable to get it back up until I rebooted. Any addtional suggestions for me? The technician was supposed to call me back on Monday and I have not heard from him so I guess he doesn't have any ideas either. Since I've already paid him over $400.00, I guess he is done. Thanks again. April |

This is from a previous post?
Why did you see a need to increase RAM? I beleive CPU speed is a factor also. Also the MB's capability to process data back and forth between the RAM,CPU and HD. When you got the RAM upgrade was it in form of an additional 256 RAM stick or was the 256 replaced with one 512? If there are more then one RAM stick? Are they of the same maker? It would be best to have 512MB set up with two 256 MB sticks purchased at the same time from the same place made by the same manufacturer. -----Original Message----- You all have been helping with the RAM problesm (Windows 98 SE with 512 MB RAM up from 256). If you are paying someone $400 to fix your problem, he
probably takes you for a sucker and is prolonging the problem to make more money. The RAM you added can't be responsible for low system resources because the system resources are two blocks within the conventional RAM area. The system resources wiuldn't work at all if that area of RAM were faulty, which is highly unlikely anyway. Have you used a free diagnostic utility such as MemTest from http://www.memtest86.com/ to test the RAM? It would have been cheaper just to format your system and reinstall Windows. April,
Show us *exactly* what it says under the [vcache] heading in System.ini, for the maxfilecache setting. Low resources is not related to the amount of RAM installed. Please do the following: Click StartRun, type MSINFO32 and click OK. In the left pane of the System Information window, click the + sign to expand the "Software Environment" category. In the left pane, click to select "Startup Programs"....they will appear in a list on the right. Press Ctrl-A on the keyboard, which will highlight everything in the list on the right. Press Ctrl-C to copy the list to the 'clipboard'. Open a reply to this message, click in the body of the message and press Ctrl-V to paste the list from the clipboard to the message, and post back to this thread. Also, press Ctrl+Alt+Delete to bring up the Task Manager and post back with what is listed there when you experience the problem. Please tell me exactly what the "tech" did to the machine, for his absurd charge of $400. -- Glen Ventura, MS MVP W95/98 Systems http://dts-l.org/goodpost.htm "April" wrote in message ... Thanks Eric. No, not a sucker-just need my machine fixed as
a use it for work. Yes. Used memtest. 2 sticks of RAM. Under My Computer, Properties, it says 511 MB RAM. I reformatted the system and reinstalled Windows 98 SE before I took it to the computer technician. I was not having systems resources errors until the 256 MB of additional RAM was installed. The reason I took it to the technician is I was having a windows protection error when I would boot up in the a.m. as well as a Zip Drive that would not work, and I needed a network card installed. The need for the additional RAM was in hopes it would speed up my machine somewhat when using Dreamweaver and Adobe Photoshop. Thank you. Yes. Alll the responses were very helpful but did not solve
my problem. RAM installed was an addtional stick. I don't know if they are the same kind or not. Had a technician put it in. Thank you. April -----Original Message----- This is from a previous post? "had a technician..." well not a very good one, take it back and have him fix

Have a look here for some clues as to what may cause resources to deplete:
http://www.onlinehelp.bc.ca/tips.htm#resources Are these the same startups that you had running prior to the tech wirking on it? What items do you have disabled in msconfig startup tab? I suggest that you re-enable all the items in msconfig startup tab, but do NOT reboot when prompted. Download Hijack This to a folder *other than* your desktop or the temp folder, and do a Scan; then save the results in a log file but do not "fix" anything yet. Also create a Startup list per the instructions in the tutorial linked below. Copy/paste both logs into a reply here. The tutorial for using Hijack This and saving the logs, is located he http://tomcoyote.com/hjt/ Here are more detailed instructions: Download, unzip, and run Hijack This from one of these locations: http://computercops.biz/downloads-cat-14.html http://www.majorgeeks.com/downloads31.html http://www.spywareinfo.com/downloads...HijackThis.exe Unzip to a folder other than your Desktop or the Temp folder, doubleclick HijackThis.exe, and hit "Scan". When the scan is finished, the "Scan" button will change into a "Save Log" button. Press that, save the log somewhere you can find it (Desktop, My Documents, or similar). Most of what it lists will be harmless or even required, so do NOT fix anything yet. Copy the log files and paste them into a reply here....you may need to post them later in a specialised forum, if suspect items are found. -- Glen Ventura, MS MVP W95/98 Systems http://dts-l.org/goodpost.htm wrote in message ...
